Hillbilly Elegy was an excellent look at life in Appalachian America. J.D. Vance was right on in his descriptions of white poverty. I live in western PA and have witnessed all that he has written about in the social study of white poverty. To some people who have never witnessed this element of society, many of the people and their experiences in this memoir may be a bit shocking or unbelievable.

I was looking for a summary or analysis that would assist in guiding a book club discussion. The account was fairly choppy and then ended abruptly with more than half the narrative to go. The guide did not include the author’s reflections and analysis on the impact of familial behaviors which is very important to the overall text. I highly recommend sticking to the complete text or listen to an audio version of the book rather than settling for this abridged summary.

I read the original book several months ago on loan from library and needed a quick review as my book club is reading it. This was helpful in reminding me of the facts and issues raised in the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars As a summary it is not of much value, but the book is just OK, as well.

I am rating the Summary, not the book. I actually read the book later for a book club. I would give the actual book the same rating and would not recommend it. It starts off with Mr. Vance saying that he doesn't know why anyone would his life story. He is by all accounts a nice and decent guy, but everyone has a life story.

Yet again Easysummaries has done it. They took a great and well known book and broke it down simply and easy for us to read. The summary was easy to read and had plenty of details, from all the characters and places I am sure it wasnt easy for them to do it. And due to all the characters, background, and stories Om glad for the summary, without it I would of most likely gave up on the whole book.
