About this item

Anne Hillerman is a star.”—J. A. Jance, New York Times bestselling author

From New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman, a thrilling and moving chapter in the Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series involving several emotionally complex cases that will test the detectives in different ways.

Joe Leaphorn may be long retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, but his detective skills are still sharp, honed by his work as a private detective. His experience will be essential to solve a compelling new case: finding the birth parents of a woman who was raised by a bilagáana family but believes she is Diné based on one solid clue, an old photograph with a classic Navajo child’s blanket. Leaphorn discovers that his client’s adoption was questionable, and her adoptive family not what they seem. His quest for answers takes him to an old trading post and leads him to a deadly cache of long-buried family secrets.

As that case grows more complicated, Leaphorn receives an unexpected call from a person he met decades earlier. Cecil Bowleg’s desperation is clear in his voice, but just as he begins to explain, the call is cut off by an explosion and Cecil disappears. True to his nature, Leaphorn is determined to find the truth even as the situation grows dangerous. Investigation of the explosion falls in part to Officer Bernadette Manuelito, who discovers an unexpected link to Cecil’s missing wife.

Bernie also is involved in a troubling investigation of her own: an elderly weaver whose prize-winning sheep have been ruthlessly killed by feral dogs.

Exploring the emotionally complex issues of adoption of Indigenous children by non-native parents, Anne Hillerman delivers another thought-provoking, gripping mystery that brings to life the vivid terrain of the American Southwest, its people, and the lore and traditions that make it distinct.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Legend Continues

Anne Hillerman's talent for honoring the history of the Navajo Nation people continues. The subject of "lost birds" is a topic that describes yet another way that Anglos have robbed indigenous children of their rightful heritage. One of the best things about this latest installment in the strong part that Joe Leaphorn plays in the narrative. He has a dominant role in this excellent mystery. Hillerman also introduces readers to yet another historical, reverent, and beautiful landscape in the Navajo Nation. "Lost Birds" is one of the best mystery novels she has added to the seminal mysteries her father created. This entry is a real page turner. I read the new mystery in near record time and the best thing is that I want to put other tasks away so I can go back and read "Lost Birds" again. "Lost Birds" is a triumph.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great story

A great story, with lots of twists and turns, but it lacks the expected Hillerman degree of cultural and geographic/geologic detail found in the earlier books by both father and daughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Birds - another great Hillerman story.

Wonderful story. My wife and I love the twists and turns and the way the author weaves in such important Indigenous People's issues as alcoholism, limited basic necessities such as running water and heat, inadequate schools & missing women as well. Ms. Hillerman also called attention to the challenges women have in career advancement. We enjoyed reading about our favorite characters as deal with real life issues.

I have read almost all of her books. They are well written with great characters and exciting mysteries. Love them all. Having lived in NM for years, I enjoy reading about that area and Native Americans.

3.0 out of 5 stars 90% good but author can't write endings
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2024
I have all Tony Hillerman's books and most of his daughter's (Anne) books. I was really pleased initially to see Anne continue her father's stories, but Anne can't write endings, so all of the books I've ready by her are unsatisfying since the ending comes and it's just blah blah. Plus, she has backed way off of the Navajo/landscape stuff, so it's just now a run-of-the-mill mystery that, further, has a blah blah ending, although with a few familiar character names although very little of those characters' persona--just names, not personages. Won't buy any more of her stuff except I still have another purchase to read, but it's been moved to the bottom of my list. I am familiar with the geographic areas depicted and she could do so much better if she emulated her father's focus. I give it a 90% cuz the book does start off OK until it dies somewhere near the end. When I finished this book tonight, I actually was foolish enough to think I could end it better--still not sure how the plot points got resolved, whereas the other stuff I'm reading now (cf David Marcum Sherlock Holmes stuff) is very satisfying and clear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another strong story in this series

I’m a fan of the original Leaphorn novels and have grown fond of Anne Hillerman’s take on the characters. This story was interesting and the characters remain well developed. It was a bit convoluted with several side plots that probably could have been eliminated while focusing on the main plot lines.

Just when I thought I had figured out who dun it, Anne Hillerman proved me wrong. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep mystery fans engrossed, and lots of cultural information (shared with deep affection and respect for the Dine) for people who want to learn more about people. Ms. Hillerman gives life to these characters, making them real people. Thank you for sharing them with us.
