5.0 out of 5 stars REVIEW OF ADVANTAGE II LARGE CAT FLEA CONTROL

PROS: works well, appropriate for large cats, easy application, ability to buy in bulk
CONS: expensive, sometimes applicator breaks, stinky smell!

I first purchased this product in August 2015, Again in Janurary 2016, and I just purchased this again (July 2016). I purchased this product to help control fleas on my two cats, one of which is an indoor/outdoor cat. The neighborhood I live in has terrible fleas, so using flea medication is essential.

The product arrived quickly, and came with thorough instructions, which I skimmed. The medication comes in a tiny tube incased in a foil packet. I opened the packet, and took out the tube. You break the seal on the tube by inverting the cap and puncturing the seal. I did this and accidentally twisted, causing the point on the top of the lid to become lodged in the opening of the tube. This was stressful because each treatment is so expensive. I realized, however, that I could fish out the point with some tweezers and still use the product! I then pinned my cat down and applied the product to the back of their neck. While I did see a decrease in fleas, I still saw several. I increased application to once every two weeks, and added baths and flea combing to the regime. Eventually, I was able to apply only once a month. During the summer the flea population seems to increase, which also coincided with my adoption of a second cat. I noticed the cat came in with fleas and I applied this medication, but it didn't seem to do much. I then woke up one morning with about 30 flea bites covering my lower legs and feet! I was horrified, and I knew it was time to get serious!

After a bit of research I realized apart of why the medication may have been ineffective previously was that I wasn't applying it correctly (ha! Thats what i get for skimming!) Rereading instructions, I realized that I need to part my cats fur and try to make skin contact with the medication. I also learned that if my cats lick it it will taste bitter, discouraging licking behaviors of the medication. I'm going to include a few steps I took to control fleas in my house, unrelated to this product, but I think it might be useful! Scroll down to my conclusion if uninterested :) Anyways, so my cats hate baths (they were both rescued and are older so its hard to introduce new behaviors, I mean, I'm no jackson galaxy) For this reason flea baths always stressed me out and I was worried about my cats catching a cold or licking the flea shampoo and getting sick.Instead of bathing my cats, I gave them a pill that will kill all the fleas on them within 6 hours( https://www.amazon.com/Novartis-Capstar-Flea-Tablets-Count/dp/B005Z6UL1M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1469319334&sr=8-2&keywords=flea+killer+pill). Using this pill in conjunction with this treatment, was a life saver! The next thing I did was give my pets a dry, diatomaceous earth bath. If you choose to do this with your cats, make sure you use food grade DE. DE is a great natural alternative for flea control, but the dust can be damaging to yourself and your cats! To prevent this, I wore a bandana around my mouth, and I stuck a comfy cone on my cat ( https://www.amazon.com/Comfy-Cone-E-Collar-Large-Black/dp/B000XY7CKE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469319818&sr=8-1&keywords=comfy+cone). My cats didn't like it, but it was safer and easier than flea baths! I also put some apple cider vinegar diluted with water in a spray bottle, and I sprayed down my cats. They hated this, but I think it maybe helped the fleas? It also reduced dust from the DE.

CONCLUSION: I think that all cat owners should use this product on their cats, even if their cats are indoor cats. an inch of prevention is worth a pound of solution, and this is especially true for fleas. Make sure to treat your cats regularly and make sure you apply it correctly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Advantage works

Well, bottom line is that these drops work. I applied these drops less than a week ago to 2 cats and they're not scratching nearly as much. Ok, so my mom adopted 2 cats last year. They were fine all year until they started going out back. Then the scratching started. I have to preface by saying one of the cats is still mostly wild and is just getting use to a fews strokes on her back before she runs away. That said, I knew I had to be quick. With a treat in 1 hand and an open Advantage tube in the other I was able to distract her with food and just pressed the tube into the nape of her neck & squeezed. Shockingly, it worked. I had fears that it would be all over her fur, but pressing it down ensured contact with the skin. Unlike other brands I've tried in the past, Advantage is just a small amount of liquid. Honestly, all flea meds scare me as I know they must be really strong to do the job they do. After I applied it, both cats tolerated it, but then they reacted. The wild one kept running all over the house and the tame one was restless for a few hours. It bothers me to see them like that BUT I also know that fleas can kill a cat. Seriously, I've seen it happen. Fleas make cats sick and cause them to be anemic. So, do I give my cats meds that will cause a bad reaction for a few hours, then protect them for the next 30 days or do I do nothing and let them scratch nonstop knowing that the fleas are harming them with every bite? It was an easy decision. It's been almost a week and I can see they're so much more comfortable from not having to scratch all the time. Sure they still scratch a little - but that's normal - the bites are still healing and any new flea that bites them will die. I read that you have to use flea drops for like 5 months straight to ensure you eliminate all the fleas that may be hiding out in the surrounding areas. I'm willing to do it. You can tell when your cats are happy, and I know these 2 are far more comfortable than they were a week ago.

This is a great product I put it on both of my cats and it immediately started killing the fleas. It was easy to use after I captured the cats and held them close. They are super smart so that was the only problem I had they knew what was about to happen. It doesn't have a strong order like some other products that I have tried.
Two months of treatment and all of the fleas were gone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best topical treatment

We’ve used this on our cats even though they’re strictly indoors but still have access to their catio and we can track these nasty parasites in on our shoes. I don’t like the chemical aspect because it can’t be good for them and it smells so terrible … I can’t imagine having that applied to me where I couldn’t reach to clean it off. I discourage the XD because that chemical smell is probably radon or something because it’s unbearable. Gave them a bath after we applied the XD. But the II is good. We’ve never found fleas or ticks on them. Thankfully.

Last year, My indoor cats somehow all popped up with fleas. We know it can happen so we have always treated with Frontline during the summer months...however despite being indoors and being treated they still got fleas. Everyone was scratching ,licking themselves, followed by puking all the hair they licked off all over the house.
Decided to try something different which lead me to this product.. within 2 weeks the itching had stopped and the fleas were gone... here we are a year later and using again for the summer and no fleas. This stuff works.
I have 3 cats of all different weights so I must purchase for both small and large cats.. this treatment is not one size fits all. It goes by weight. The small version goes on rather quickly over a small area while the larger version has alot in it and requires alot of more are to place it on. Overall it works and is affordable for an owner of 3 cats.
