Product description

AndroSpectro allows you to create a visual image from the sounds around you. For non-techies: AndroSpectro is the simplest spectrogram app available. Just press the Play button. You can zoom and pan using multi-touch gestures. You can also easily set the Maximum level or press 'auto' for auto-leveling. For techies: AndroSpectro gives you control over every parameter you can think of. Display up to 3 minutes of continuous recording history and save as an image for later viewing. For mega-geeks: Export the raw Spectrogram data to Matlab for further analysis. Your phone becomes your handheld input device for advanced audio analysis.

Every signal is a combination of unique frequencies, and can be disassembled into its frequency components (Frequency Spectrum). A Spectrogram is a technique that is used in Audio Analysis (Spectral Analysis) to see the real-time behaviors of signals. It plots the frequency components of the signal over time. The bar on the left shows the frequency (in [Hz]) and the color is the intensity of that frequency.

5.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable aural spectrogram at a reasonable price.

This is a relatively simple app compared with other apps that also perform audio analysis. Simple in that it only does one thing: it plots an aural spectrogram (aural meaning it analyzes over the "standard" audio spectrum, as in up to 20 kHz). Like the other apps I have in this category, it has zero documentation and at times can feel like an IQ test. But its functionally is so limited that the controls are not that bad.

There are two things worth noting. One I like, the other I don't.

The one I like: it lets you set the upper frequency to be graphed. As a beginning (read, struggling) singer, I use the spectrogram to see my harmonics when I sing a note. Most of the other aural spectrograms have fixed upper frequencies at around 20 kHz. That results in the harmonics I care about being limited to small area of the screen, as the harmonics are mostly below 1 kHz. This app allows you to set the upper frequency via a slider control. Interestingly, the value you set with the slider is not the value the app ends up using. The app has a mind of its own. But the value it chooses is close enough to what you set that everything is fine. I'm currently using it with an upper frequency of 1.1 kHz, and that spreads my harmonics out nicely, using virtually the entire screen. Although not really essential, expanding the harmonic display in this fashion is a plus in my book.

The one thing I don't like: when the graphing reaches the end of its display window on the right side of the screen, instead of scrolling the data plotted so far it re-starts plotting from the left side, overwriting the older data as it goes. I believe that scrolling the screen makes it easier for the user to follow the graph and is more professional.

One other feature they promote: they give you access to many different settings to control the analysis and related operations. The only one of these settings I care about is the frequency range, as described above.

Overall, a reasonable app for its purpose. No real complaints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of them all

I've been an electrical engineer for 35 years now. I've been using Androspectro since they first came on the scene (10 years ago ??). It is the ONLY spectral app that correlated perfectly with a Bruel & Kjaer lab spectrum analyzer that I have access to. This is the only REAL and USABLE Android waterfall spectrum analyzer, in my opinion.
