Excellent detail on the true story of ADD and impact on life.Dr. Gabor Mate is a renowned speaker and author, but to be honest, it is difficult for me to listen to him speak. His content is wonderful but his delivery is not smooth and some of the most important words are lost. However.... this book and his others are so helpful and his expertise is evident.
I am a behavioral health provider, and this book is helpful with students, teachers, physicians, adults with ADD, and anyone that comes in contact with them. I first read this book about 4 years ago, and I keep having to replace it as I give it away or loan it.

An insightful take on ADHD from a successful professional who suffered from it his whole life. It is important to understand the context of how ADHD often came about, but also to understand it’s not a sickness but a condition that needs to be managed. Whether you or your loved ones have ADHD, the book provides useful insights.

First, the negatives. I would give 2 minuses:
1) Applies only for the audio book - I feel that this would be so much better if it was read by Gabor Mate himself.
2) At times it feels that the author could get to the point faster. At least to me some parts seemed unnecessarily long.

The positives:
As a woman who has a husband and a daughter with ADD, this book helped me in so many aspects. Now I have such a better understanding of them both and ADD as a whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars ADD And Where It Comes From.

The author offers a unique perspective as a doctor who has ADD and has taken medication for it.
His view on genetics in ADD makes a lot of sense. It's a combination of factors and predisposition.
I like that the book follows a type of chronology:
Childhood - to adolescence - to adulthood regarding ADD. Reading all the way through enlightens how people can eventually be adults with ADD and where it could have started.
Some parts of the book hit home for me personally, the topic of ADD and addiction and the part about allergies are just two of them.
I like the book a lot for offering information from a different perspective. I learned a lot from it!

I found myself highlighting section after section of this insightful and empathetic book. As someone who lives with ADD, this was the book I was waiting for. I will definitely re-read. It helped me to not only understand myself better, but to forgive myself and others.
