Kelly Fox has done it again. This whole series is beautiful and I have loved them all but this one killed me. The grief journey was so real and well written. I cried and laughed along the journey to a happy ending for Ren and Major. The Lost Boys are a true family and of course all were a part of this book. Read them all and love them all!

The perfect conclusion

The Steady left me breathless, from smiling and laughing out loud, to crying tears of happiness. A rich, poignant, exploration of grief and life during that grief, as you can make room for love and happiness in the presence of sweet memories. Loved it, loved all of the characters and their celebrations of love. And I'll always see Robert in every Cardinal in every tree from now on. Thank you Kelly, for this beautiful story.

Love and grief

While it was sad for Ren to lose his husband, he and Major made a lovely couple. I love how Major made space for what Ren needed.

Heartbreaking and Healing, her writing keeps getting better!

As the final novel in the series, this book revisits pivotal moments in the earlier books from Ren's perspective, rather than that of his son or the Lost Boys. It also more clearly shows his grief and how lost he feels as a result of losing his husband and the love of his life.
Ren and Major have been present in all the books, with some small hints of what was going on between them, but this book showcases their relationship developing in such a messy, human, REAL way that was heartbreaking and healing simultaneously. You could celebrate Ren laughing and teasing Major and in the next instant feel his profound sense of grief and guilt.
Major is busy with his own life and expanding things in his business and his home and is surprised to be feeling these things and for this person. Yet he remains steadfast and his kindness is genuine to his core, which is exactly what Ren needs to anchor him. The two find a new balance and - despite obstacles - make their way to a heartwarming ending full of love and joy.
Kelly Fox always manages to balance the real work of relationships and the challenges life can dish out (mundane and more extreme) with laughter, the joy of found family, snarky banter, and a sense of genuine people who care about one another. This book is no exception and I maintain that her work keeps getting better and better. Start with the Skeptic and read about all of Mr. Paige's Lost Boys, then work your way through her other books.

Incredible Story

First off, this book was amaizing. It will also probably make you cry..but in a cathartic way. Kelly is really good at doing that.
After the loss of his husband, Robert, Ren feels lonely and lost. The note his husband left him told him to move on and find love again, he's just not sure he has it in himself to do that. How do you get over the love of your life dying? Luckily, he finds someone who can help take the edge off for a while.
Major just wanted to comfort Ren. Help get him through some of his grief. He never intended to fall for his former teachers husband.
After some challenges, these men finally get their act together. It's a beautiful story which I plan to read a few times over. Seeing the other guys in the series rally around them and support their love was amazing to see.
I absolutely love this series and how interconnected her series have become. I absolutely recommend this one.

✨Whatever happened after this, my heart was forever altered. Forever his.✨
We all knew going into this story that there would be tears involved and there most definitely were. Not all the tears were sad though, some were happy and filled with laughter. I love how Fox writes and I don’t think I have ever been disappointed with one of her novels. I loved this series so very much and it was so well-done. Ren and Major were heartbreakingly beautiful together and I adored them so very much…both individually and as a smoking hot couple!! Ren’s obsession with Major’s nipples was one of my favorite parts of this story…lol!!
Mr. Paige brought love and laughter to his family and loved ones, even from the grave. I have never personally lost someone so close to me but my best friend from high school lost her husband of 18 years and then remarried just over a year after his loss. I never fully understood how she could “move on” so quickly like that, and while it’s not my place to fully understand her reasonings, this book really helped me to understand her just a bit more. Love isn’t lessened by “moving on”, just expanded and never ever forgotten.
✨So, Ren, light of my life, you must love. Love fully. For me✨

I was nervous going into The Steady- I knew it was going to wreck me, delving into Ren's pain and loneliness. Yes, Major also mourned the loss of his former teacher and friend, but Ren's loss was devastating, and Kelly Fox didn't spare us any of his pain. That's a wonderful thing, in case I don't make that clear. We are taken into the heart and soul of Ren, and into Major and other folks in the series. The growth and grief and more growth is so well-written and not done with a heavy hand. That Ren could and did find love again, not one that replaced his witty and wise deceased husband, but one that added to that love, was beautiful. Too many times, when one main character has lost their 'true love', they fall for someone else and love them more or compare them and suddenly their lost love had a lot of issues that made them kind of meh. But not here. This story-- this entire series-- is about love, so much love and compassion that even though it's fiction, it brings hope to the reader. Or it does to this reader. Kelly Fox, thank you for this journey. You truly made this grinch's heart grow at least 4 times larger.
