About this item

A New York Times and USA Today bestseller

From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parents’ belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept Me Guessing
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2024
Home Is Where The Bodies Are is one of those reads that kept me interested and turning the pages all the way to the end. It kept me guessing a lot and held out on a few twists which were delicious and surprising to me.

This is a messed up story of three very different siblings who are back home after their mother’s death and surprising will reading. Their father Brian left his wife Laura and the entire family seven years ago. The oldest, Beth stayed to take care of the house and Laura. Nicole, the middle child, chase her next high in whichever run down dump she was in at any given moment and the youngest, the Golden child, Michael made a fortune in tech. Now, they all come back together after the death of their mother and while sorting through her belongings come across things that will bring light to deep buried secrets and answers as to why they can’t locate their father.

This is a typical family dynamic with mom & dad, a responsible older sibling, a middle sibling who thinks they aren’t seen and the youngest prodigal child. Each are jealous of the other, although there’s love when they’re younger, it seems that animosity has taken its place. I like the siblings and I find myself rooting for all of them in different ways. The writing is wonderful and the plot is good. The mysteries themselves are good too.

I recommend this thriller, family drama mystery because there is a few twists and turns and a good tie up in the end also if you like a good HEA, she gave us that too!

This book is absolutely perfect from start to finish, superb, I’m trying to think of the BEST word out there, This book is like butter! The cream of the crop! The cherry on top! It is also emotional, so be prepared, and bring tissues.

4.0 out of 5 stars I’m a fan of her Tiktok

I’m a lifelong bookworm. So when #booktok came along I was thrilled. Jeneva Rose was one of the first authors I found on their doing their own content and marketing. She’s a super smart author, with great style and super funny snarky personality to keep you laughing and following along. I finally picked up this book happily willing to support an author who is such a fun person. The book was a fast easy read. She adds perfectly believable characters to her mix as these siblings feel like my family. However, I knew what was happening from the first introduction of the brother. If you’ve ever had a narcissist in your life, you will see this plot twist coming a mile away. But it still was a good story, plausible and very easy to follow as well as see occurring in our society as a whole. Sometimes books will take you to a world far away from your troubles. Others remind you of why you cut toxic people from your life. We love you, Ms. Rose. Keep bringing the sass!

After the passing of their mother, Beth, Nicole and Michael gathered together in their childhood home with the goal of putting her mother to rest. In an attempt to reminisce on some of their past memories of their happy childhood they uncover that not everything is as it had seemed. When the happy home video from the summer of ’99 cuts off to show their father covered in blood and a body on the screen. They have to make the decision to uncover the truth or leave it buried in the past.

This book was so well written had me working hard to solve the mystery before it was revealed in the end. While this is a suspenseful thriller it is also a story of overcoming grief, hurt, addiction, and complicated sibling relationships. I spent a majority of my time reading this being frustrated with the characters until it clicked that some of the topics addressed in this book hits really close to home for me. I found myself identifying with Beth in regards to her situation as being the caregiver of a parent who is dying, and how watching a parent pass away is something that chips away at you. I emphasized with her struggling relationship with Nicole and the emotional toll it takes on someone with a sibling with an addiction. I found myself wishing for them to have the happy ending that we did not have, which is not something I thought I would find my self doing with reading a thriller novel. 10/10 would read again.
