About this item

From bestselling author S. Massery comes a brand new dark hockey reverse harem standalone.

Trust no one.

I learn that the hard way after hockey star Carter Masters stabs me in the back and turns our rival school against me.

Suddenly, I’m Public Enemy Number One at Framingham State.

Just a year later, that’s exactly where I’m forced to enroll.

No one has forgotten what I did.

The anti-Sydney campaign is led by two gorgeous, psycho hockey players. Oliver Ruiz, captain. And Penn Walker, the devastating goalie.

They have me in their sights the moment I step foot on their campus. Where they lead, the rest of the students follow. They won’t stop until I’m gone and Carter’s team faces payback.

My only solace from the constant bullying comes from a blocked number that keeps texting me.

But as much as Oliver and Penn want to, they can’t drive me off completely. Because even at the worst moments, I know I’m not going anywhere.

After all, I’m their coach’s daughter.

This book has a lot of triggers, so please make sure to check TW. Going into this, I thought there would be two guys for her, but I was surprised that there were three. (I don’t think I read correctly how many guys there would be.) I have never read a why choose book before, since I normally prefer the relationship to have two people, but this was surprisingly good. It had spice, suspense, and, of course, is dark. Had some very, very dark thing happening. Things that were just morally wrong and questionable.

With dark romance, you pretty much have to accept that the characters will be… well, red flags. The characters did some, um, crazy things. Unforgivable things. That was to be expected. In my opinion, they were all morally gray characters. Carter, the ex. Oliver, FSU goalie. And Penn, FSU captain. All three became what Sydney was missing, I guess. I don’t know how I felt about the grape scenes.

I still believe what Oliver and Penn did with the whole mask thing was unforgivable. That was just way too traumatic to even put her through. Especially knowing what happened. It was so traumatic that she basically fell into depression. Locked herself up in her apartment. Wasn’t eating and resorted to harming herself. so yeah, unforgivable. He scarred her all over again. I’ve seen a lot of people say that Penn was their favorite, but it seems like Carter did the least unforgivable things to her. They were all did terrible things and were equally terrible. I liked Penn, I liked Carter, but I didn’t really care for Oliver. At least not until the end. Sydney had far too many traumatic things happen to her at once. I almost gave up because what else could happen to her?

I did like that she and her dad became close. I still don’t know how I feel about a foursome couple, but it eventually worked for them. This was my first read by this author, and it overall surprised me how much I like why choose.

Holy freaking roller coaster of love and hate for all of the male characters in this book. Sydney, in my opinion, is the strongest female character S. Massery has written (not including the FMC’s in sterling falls). Sydney experienced many traumatic events throughout the book, and while her coping mechanisms weren’t always great, Sydney bossed up and continued on living. Which is why I classified her as the strongest FMC. Sydney’s background story is rough with an absent father and a mother who’s semi present but not mentally present. While I found some of Sydney’s decision making is immature and petty , I could see myself making the same decisions given the situations.

Carter is captain for SJU and while him and Sydney had a past, they had a current deal that was mutually beneficial for both of them…until it wasn’t. Carter won his games while Sydney got to get back at her dad who is conveniently the rival coach. That is until Carter turns Sydney into public enemy number 1 at both schools.

Oliver Ruiz the Framington state captain. Oliver sees someone where they shouldn’t be, and doing something they shouldn’t be doing. Oliver couldn’t leave it alone, could he? His decisions and words that night led to a lot of retaliation inflicted on Sydney, which of course he was fine with. But there’s a very fine line between love and hate. Oliver finds out when that hate crosses over to love, you can’t take back all the hurt and plans set in motion by hate. The painful reminders may not physically be there but unfortunately the memories cannot be forgotten.

Penn (personally my favorite) framington State goalie. Penn hated Sydney but loved and respected her father (which also happens to be his coach). Penn is complicated in the fact that he’s Oliver’s friend. While he may go along with some of Oliver’s plans he is more than willing to give his opinion and choose love over hate when it comes to the coaches daughter. Plus he has his own agenda when it comes to Sydney.

I really loved this book because there is sooooo many curveballs and I can’t say I honestly expected any of them. S. Massery did an amazing job at creating new characters with completely different situations than her previous books, which I find is harder to do with dark romance and hockey becoming very popular. Also, I love how often Caleb makes it back into her books.
