Technically, you can read this book as a standalone, but I strongly recommend starting with the first book, Fated to the Wolf Prince. Each book in this series focuses on one of the three main MFCs, and while the first book focused on Brielle, this book is about Shay and her potential mate. The first book sets the background for all three MFCs and builds their character, personalities and friendship. The author does a great job of building Shay and Dirge's story while interweaving and continuing Brielle's story from the first book. The pacing is good, and the story continues to flush out the characters' past hurts and fears all the while showing their strength and courage.
Another aspect I enjoyed was that this couple's relationship developed completely differently than the first book's couple, and the third book will vary as well. I appreciate the individuality of each couples' storyline and the challenges of their relationships, while maintaining the overarching plot.
This book begins right where the first book ended and it's a good thing, because that book ended with a bang! Shay and Dirge have painful pasts and fears they must face, and the author develops their story throughout the book with them facing these fears working together. When Shay and Dirge finally get together it gets spicey! The spice continues through the book and I would say the spice is 3 of 5 chili peppers.
Other types of shifters are brought into the story and the bad guys show they aren't going anywhere building to the fight our characters are facing in the final book. This book hints toward the next MFCs story arc without being distracting and I am waiting impatiently for that book to be released.
If you are looking for a fun, entertaining pnr book that has varying characters with their unique challenges, you'll enjoy this book and series!
I received this book as an arc and am leaving an unbiased review.
