5.0 out of 5 stars Well Curated, Diverse Anthology of Stories by Indigenous Authors

I was absolutely uncertain what I'd encounter going into this collection. I wanted to experience a wider range of indigenous authors. I love folk stories and legends, and I saw that one of my favorite authors, Stephen Graham Jones, had written the introduction.

I chose the audiobook because, like the anthology, it provided a number of new voices to experience, and it was clear that the editors remained true to their theme, and the purpose. As with most anthologies, the stories in this volume (and in turn the voices behind them producing the audio) were a mixed bag. Some felt incomplete. Some were stories by indigenous authors, but not really about folklore, or legends. The variety actually makes this collection stronger.

I have said before that an anthology that gives me three good memorable stories is a good anthology, because it's always so diverse. This one did far better than that. Personal favorites: Wingless by Marcie R. Rendon, Tick Talk, by Cherie Dimaline, Scariest Story Ever by Ricard Van Camp, Capgras, by Tommy Orange, The Scientists Horror Story by Darcie Little Badger, and Collections, by Amber Blaeser-Wardzala. Stories were narrated by: Narrated by: Erin Tripp, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Joelle Peters, Kaniehtiio Horn, Lisa Cromarty, Maika Harper, Shane Ghostkeeper, Sheldon Elter, Tara Sky. (Favorite new voice for me was Shane Ghostkeeper).

This is an important anthology, and well done. I recommend it to everyone and will now be looking for some books by those I enjoyed the most.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Stories!

Being Native American myself and a lover of Horror, this book was a must-read for me. I enjoyed all the tales within these pages, and they each were good in their own right. Of course, some stood out more than others for me, but that more than likely the case in every anthology you will read. I highly recommend this anthology for an any time read if you are a lover of Horror tales. Bravo to the authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful, thoughtful book of creepy tales

I loved how compelling this book was! It totally delivered on the skin tingling tales, while also delivering important messages about the values in Native culture. I'd recommend this to anyone who is looking for a scary story telling - maybe not suitable for children. As an adult, I loved it! I would love a second installment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2024
To be honest with you I'm actually really disappointed in this book. Just based off the title I was expecting something completely different, it just turns out to be a bunch of off-handed stories.

If you were expecting something deep and meaningful, something to teach you something about the ancients or a pastime or anything of that nature this is the wrong book.

I have enjoyed all the stories. They all have different meanings and are short enough to read quickly. A great summer veranda companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, would recommend

I loved reading this book. I do wish some of the stories were longer. To me, they felt rushed and a bit awkward at the end. Other than that it's great and I would recommend it.

I was so excited about this book. Briefly skimming it, seems like a fantastic read. However, I returned as the back cover came ripped. The risk you run ordering a paperback via Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super good scary stories.

Every single story was just great. Satisfyingly scary. Not to be read alone at night. Some stories had a satisfying sense of justice to them, as well. Really enjoyed them. Hope more are forthcoming in the near future. The collection features a wonderful group of talented authors.
