Bringing You Delicious Canned Meat Since 1937: The History of the SPAM Brand

Jay C. Hormel, son of George Hormel, had an inventive mind. He’d been working on a consumer-branded canned ham since 1926. After a decade the cooking and packaging technology aligned. And during a 1937 New Years Eve party, the name SPAM was coined and the brand was born.

Launched as 'The Meat of Many Uses,' SPAM products was quickly adopted by American housewives. By 1940 70% of urban Americans were eating SPAM products. But it was the arrival of WWII, and the need for easily- transported protein, that fueled the SPAM brand’s incredible growth. By 1959 over one billion cans had been sold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spam: Our ultimate pantry staple
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024
We’re big fans of Spam! Whether pan-fried with bread in the morning or served with rice for lunch and dinner, it’s our go-to for a quick, satisfying meal. Its distinct salty, savory flavor is just so delicious! When we don’t have the time or energy to cook, a can of Spam, fried and paired with eggs and rice, makes an easy, hearty meal.

Spam’s versatility is another reason we love it. We can whip up Spam fried rice, toss it into a macaroni salad, make a hearty Spam macaroni soup, or even create Spam musubi for a treat. It’s also incredibly popular in places like Hawaii, the Philippines, and parts of Asia. On a trip to Singapore, I was amazed to see varieties like jalapeno, bacon, hickory smoke, teriyaki, tocino, chorizo, and cheese. The first time I visited Hawaii, I found a similar selection, and in the Philippines, they even have giant 4lb cans of Spam! It just shows how beloved Spam is in some part of the world.

I’ve tried some of these different flavors, but I always find myself coming back to the original, though I prefer the less sodium version. That’s why we always keep Spam stocked in our pantry. While some people store cans of sardines and tuna, we stock up on Spam! Whenever it goes on sale at Costco or Amazon, I make sure to grab a case to keep us covered for any meal or emergency.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love spam

I don't really have anything to say except for you either love or you hate spam. I love it. And the fact that there is jalapeno spam... It was perfect. It didn't change the whole flavor of everything like a lot of the flavored spams do. I usually stick to traditional plain spam because of that issue. But the jalapeno one is perfect it does add the flavor of jalapeno but not throughout the product... It's simply tasting jalapeno where the jalapeno lies. ???? I hope you enjoy.

Kids like this just straight up fried with some cheese and a slice of American cheese on whole wheat. Yummy. Could use this in several applications. Not just for sandwiches. Good price. Can't find this in the store at this price. Love that it's shelf stable.

No explanation needed – Spam is a staple!

Spam with 50% less salt is always a go-to item for me! It’s a pantry essential that I buy regularly. The reduced salt version is perfect for those who want to enjoy Spam without as much sodium. It’s versatile, easy to cook, and always tastes great. I don’t need to say much more—if you’re a fan of Spam, this is definitely a must-have. Highly recommend for convenience and taste!

5.0 out of 5 stars I DO like spam!!!

Yesssss. OK, so growing up we always took spam with us on camping and backpack trips because it's meat that doesn't have to be refrigerated. Since I was a little kid we took it on those trips, ( living in Colorado there were many great camping trips! )
Anyhow the trick to good spam is to slice it really thin and fry it in a pan until it's crispy like bacon. When you don't have a fry pan, a sheet of foil works. Here at home I slice it thin and bake it in the toaster oven on foil.
Now Spam has several good flavors that they didn't have when I was growing up... my favorite is this jalapeno spam. We like spicy stuff. Although I will say, if you're used to hot spicy stuff, this has a low heat. It's not really hot but the jalapeno in it gives it good flavor.
If you need it hotter just add a little hot sauce before you eat it.
I recommend this!!

3.0 out of 5 stars practical solution for quick meals
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024
I recently tried a 12 oz can of a less sodium version of a well-known meat product, and it has been a convenient option for quick meals. This version offers a reduced sodium content, making it a suitable choice for those looking to limit their sodium intake while still enjoying a versatile ingredient.

The flavor is decent, and it can be easily incorporated into various dishes, whether it’s added to sandwiches, casseroles, or salads. The convenience of having it in a can makes it easy to store and use when needed. Just a note: the texture is similar to the original, so it works well in recipes that call for a meat substitute.

Overall, this less sodium option provides a practical solution for quick meals without sacrificing too much flavor. While it may not replace fresh ingredients, it serves its purpose as a convenient pantry staple for those looking for lower sodium alternatives. It’s a handy option to have on hand!
