'No Muggle Prime Minister has ever set foot in the Ministry of Magic, for reasons most succinctly summed up by ex-Minister Dugald McPhail (term of office 1858-1865): "their puir wee braines couldnae cope wi' it."' - J.K. Rowling

Pottermore Presents is a collection of J.K. Rowling's writing from the Pottermore archives: short reads originally featured on pottermore.com with some exclusive new additions. These eBooks, with writing curated by Pottermore, will take you beyond the Harry Potter stories as J.K. Rowling reveals her inspiration, intricate details of characters' lives and surprises from the wizarding world.

These stories of power, politics and pesky poltergeists give you a glimpse into the darker side of the wizarding world, revealing the ruthless roots of Professor Umbridge, the lowdown on the Ministers for Magic and the history of the wizarding prison Azkaban. You will also delve deeper into Horace Slughorn's early years as Potions master at Hogwarts - and his acquaintance with one Tom Marvolo Riddle.

I enjoy the history of one of the most infamous worlds ever devised. I love a good backstory and appreciate the short story approach.

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists is essential reading for any fan(attic) of the Harry Potter Wizarding World. Before I begin, it's important to note that a lot (if not most) of this information IS available on Pottermore. If you just want to read this without the cost, head over there, get sorted, find your patronus, and read until your heart is content! BUT! If you're an avid collector of all things Potter, this is another jewel to add to your collection! My deepest hope is that this (along with the other two Pottermore presents kindle shorts) will be made into a printed book (even together!) so I can add it to my bookshelf along with the rest of the series. Why won't they just print it already!?

In all seriousness, though, this short is filled with fantastic information about some of our (least) favorite witches & wizards. This one is more of the least favorite, but alas, we can't just have all the good stuff. The book starts by detailing information about that horrible cow…I mean Umbridge. It then goes on to detail some information about Minister for Magics and Azkaban. From there you learn about Slughorn, Potions, the Polyjuice Potion, and Cauldrons. Then you learn about Qirrell, and finally, everyone's favorite Poltergeist, Peeves. I won't get in to all the information in them, but I always find the additional back story on these characters sheds new light on them when I re-read the books. It's so wonderful to continue to get new information from JK Rowling about the Wizarding World. After the fiasco that was 'The Cursed Child', new writing that actually makes sense in the universe is always welcomed with open arms. The best part about these shorts is that you can just hear JKR's voice whispering this information into your head as you read. It's HER, not the crap from CC. It's refreshing and wonderful and it definitely brought me back from the void after I read CC.

As I said, you can find all the information in other places, but it's nice to have it all together for collectors, fanatics, and those that don't get to Pottermore. If you just want the info for free, look elsewhere. If you want to have and keep it? What are you waiting for?!

*** ALERT ***

If Harry Potter and the Cursed Child disappointed you and has you worried about plunking down your hard-earned cash for another book, worry not. This is J K Rowling in her element. Outstanding.

A – Fans of Harry Potter and fantasy.

Q - How was this book obtained?

A – Not really, but I doubt any buyer would be purchasing this without having purchased every Potter book written.

A – No complaints here. These bits and pieces are of special interest to Harry Potter devotees, but will interest many others, such as me.

To give a feel for the editing, and the style and flow of this work, I am posting two brief excerpts below.

‘…AZKABAN
BY J.K. ROWLING

Azkaban has existed since the fifteenth century and was not originally a prison at all. The island in the North Sea upon which the first fortress was built never appeared on any map, Muggle or wizarding, and is believed to have been created, or enlarged, by magical means.

The fortress upon it was originally home to a little-known sorcerer who called himself Ekrizdis. Evidently extremely powerful, but of unknown nationality, Ekrizdis, who is believed to have been insane, was a practitioner of the worst kinds of Dark Arts. Alone in the middle of the ocean, he lured, tortured and killed Muggle sailors, apparently for pleasure, and only when he died, and the concealment charms he had cast faded away, did the Ministry of Magic realise that either island or building existed. Those who entered to investigate refused afterwards to talk of what they had found inside, but the least frightening part of it was that the place was infested with Dementors.

Many in authority thought Azkaban an evil place that was best destroyed. Others were afraid of what might happen to the Dementors infesting the building if they deprived them of their home. The creatures were already strong and impossible to kill; many feared a horrible revenge if they took away a habitat where they appeared to thrive. The very walls of the building seemed steeped in misery and pain, and the Dementors were determined to cling to it. Experts who had studied buildings built with and around Dark magic contended that Azkaban might wreak…’

J.K. Rowling’s thoughts

The name ‘Azkaban’ derives from a mixture of the prison ‘Alcatraz’, which is its closest Muggle equivalent, being set on an island, and ‘Abaddon’, which is a Hebrew word meaning ‘place of destruction’ or ‘depths of hell’.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some fun bits of trivia, some less so

This deeper look into characters and their background has some interesting points, some boring, and some ugly bits. There's a fan theory based on mythology that Umbridge was, well... Left to be violated by centaurs. Her nervous reaction afterwards to hearing horse noises seems to back that up, and Rowling seems to be perfectly ok with that:

"Dolores Umbridge may have looked like an iced cupcake, but she was anything but sweet. She was savage, sadistic and remorseless. When she dared take control of Hogwarts from Albus Dumbledore, she committed all sorts of sinister acts. Under the newly created title of ‘High Inquisitor’ she single-handedly (well, with a little help from Filch) sucked the beloved school of all its joy, put every student in grave danger, and tortured Harry Potter. As far as we’re concerned, she more than deserved her fate at the hands (hooves?) of centaurs."

The inspiration that the author cites for characters ranges from mythological to personal acquaintances, some of which are not presented in a good light.

I could have done without the list of every Minister of Magic, but three cheers for the current one.

The backgrounds on Slughorn, Azkaban, and Quirrel were interesting, and the small bit on potions. Needs more Snape - everything needs more Snape.
