5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Explore Middle Earth

I didn't buy this for my kids (girl, 6, and boy, 2). I like that the content is pretty much age appropriate such that they can play it and they can watch me play it without me feeling too badly. But that's not why I bought it.

This is the best way to explore Middle Earth as portrayed in Peter Jackson's films. Ostensibly, the main focus of the game is following the events of the films and books. But that will only take you a handful of hours.

The real fun comes from exploring the nooks and crannies of this recreated world. It's not as sprawling as, say, Skyrim. But all of the major locations of the film and books are present. You can, in fact, just walk straight from the Shire to Mordor. There are dozens of characters to unlock, side-quests to complete, and items to craft.

The difficulty of the main quest is pretty low. I'm sure my daughter could beat it if her hands fit the DualShock better. But many of the puzzles to be completed to unlock those characters, finish those side-quests, etc., are gnarly. There is a pleasing depth to the experience.

The graphics are gorgeous. The soundtrack to the film is borrowed and expanded and lends your gaming sessions a feeling of magnificence.

I was initially disappointed by the brief and easy "main" game, but once I started digging into the game that opens up after you have "beaten" it I forgave all.

Highly recommended. One of the most fun gaming experiences I've had on the PS3.

I'm just going to start off by saying Wow LEGO- you did it again!!! This game, like all other LEGO video games, its incredibly fun to play and be a part of. The jokes are great, the dubbing of voices is amazing since they used the actual voices of the cast of the LOTR from the films. Its easy to play and it offers a MASSIVE map of Middle Earth that has endless secrets and items to find. I sat down and played this game for 6-7 days, only stopping to eat, go to the bathroom and sleep and only then did I fully complete the game. You can chose from a wide range of characters with different, unique abilities (for example Sam's main weapon is a frying pan & he can cook, make fire and even use his Elven Rope he got in the FOTR) from Frodo to Sauron. The graphics are superb as well. Even during climactic scenes (no spoilers i promise) the games deals with it seriously, but with a silliness that's characteristic only to LEGO. Multiplayer is fun and easy with split screens and ideal for playing with a friend or child. Wonderful, fun, funny and really cool. 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Lego game so far

My wife and I love to play the Lego games together, and so far, this is the best one that we have played. Obviously, we have not completed the game yet, but what we have played is fantastic. The hubs are much larger and more open then previous lego games, and if you know your way around the mvoies/story, you will know where to go next to continue the story. For example, when we finished weathertop, we pretty much knew to head towards Rivendell next, and we had no problem finding the next stage. Coolest part is that when you are in the hubs, there are neat little side quests (like the lego guy who lost his bag of crops on the road to Brie when the black riders came). Looks like we will have to backtrack a bit to help him out. Pretty cool way to add some replayability!

I only played a demo of the last lego game (Batman 2), so I am new to the lego characters talking aspect of these games. At first, ti is very weird if you have played all the old games, but in the end, it works really really well for this game, mainly because it jsut lifts all the audio straight from the movies. Also, it follows the movies very very religiously. No weird deviations. Imagine watching the movies again with Legos.

If you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings and a fan of the lego games, then obviously, this will not let you down. If yo uare a fan of either, then this will not let you down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Family Game

Hey, wouldn't it be awesome if Travelers Tales made a Lego "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"?

Until that time comes, we have Lego Lord of the Rings. If you are looking at this product, you have probably plaed a Lego game before. If you haven't, this a good game to start your experience with. These Lego games just keep getting better. There is a lot to do and a lot to explore in this game. My son is 4 1/2, and this game is just a bit too difficult for him to play by himself. However, if we are both playing, we are able to get through the levels together. When playing with young children, there is no shame in using some of the cheat codes for more studs, invincibility, etc... or for sitting there playing while your ipad is open to a walkthough for getting through some of the places where it is not quite obvious what action is needed to be taken. The game is still fun for me to play with him, and challenging to him without being impossible, and the it keeps the story going. Much more faithful to the movies than I expected. There is a lot less comedic relief in this game than other games in the series, but it isn't scary for children. My favorite parts of this game is the battle between Gandalf and Saruman, and the fight between Gandalf and the Balrog. It was also great to walk around and smash things as an Ent.
