About this item

“Murder, a love triangle, and small-town secrets in Tallahassee, Florida...an unputdownable read.” —The New York Times

“A compelling psychological double portrait of what happens when two people are forever bound by a life-altering secret.” —Becky Cooper, bestselling author of We Keep the Dead Close

From the critically acclaimed author dubbed “one of today’s finest practitioners of nonfiction” (The New York Times Book Review), a breathless true crime tale of sex, religion, and murder in the deep South.

Mike and Denise Williams had a tight knit, seemingly unbreakable bond with childhood friends, Brian and Kathy Winchester. The two couples were devout, hardworking Baptists who lived perfect, quintessentially Southern lives. Their friendship seemed ironclad. That is, until December 16, 2000, when Denise’s husband Mike disappeared while duck hunting on Lake Seminole.

After no body was found, everyone assumed that Mike had drowned in a tragic accident, his body eaten by alligators. But things took an unexpected turn when, within five years of Mike’s disappearance, Brian Winchester divorced his wife and married Denise. Their surprising romance set tongues talking. People began wondering how long they had been a couple, and whether they had anything to do with Mike’s death. It took another twelve years for the truth to come out—and when it did, it was unimaginable.

Now, the full, shocking story is revealed by Mikita Brottman, acclaimed true crime writer of the “enthralling” (
San Francisco Book Review) An Unexplained Death. Through tenacious research and clear-eyed prose, she probes the psychology of a couple who killed and explores how it feels to live for eighteen years with murder on the soul.

A fascinating thrilling study of modern noir, Guilty Creatures is destined to become an instant true crime classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars A true crime story

A terrifying telling of a true life murder. Ms. Brottman retells the true crime story of murder mist foul amongst four friends when two have entered into an adulterous affair. Brian and Denise have entertained each other without their partners knowledge. Denise’s husband Mike is in the way. Brian’s wife, though suspicious, has an inkling of the he affair but little to substantiate. Once Kathy divorces Brian the road to the adulterers happily ever after begins to take shape.

It took seventeen years and an emotional confession before Mike’s body was uncovered. Mikita Brottman has shown us the underside of how sex and religion play upon each other. A good read.

I've read & listened to a podcast or 2 about this story. I was sure I knew everything I needed to know about this story. That's why I was hesitant to read about it again, but I'm glad I did. This author not only brought out things I didn't know, she told it in a different way. I'm so glad I decided to read this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Story - Mostly Because I Live Nearby

Living near Tallahassee, I found this book intriguing and engaging overall. However, the frequent psychoanalysis often felt like speculative guesswork, which detracted from the narrative. The author appeared to have a particular bias against Southern Baptists, implying that repression within the faith contributed to the murder, as though non-Baptists are immune to such actions. While I'm not a Baptist myself and didn’t take offense, this perspective seemed like an unnecessary distraction. I would have appreciated more time spent on personal interviews with individuals rather than leaning heavily on hypotheses.

I can’t say a lot that I would like to say without having spoilers in my review. I will, however, say this. I’m not sure that I buy into the innuendo that divorce was such a stigmatism in the Baptist church at the time of the events described in Guilty Creatures. By this time divorce was fairly commonplace and accepted in most Protestant churches. All of the sex, drinking and drugs and these characters were concerned about a divorce tarnishing Denise’s image? I don’t think so.

I thought I knew about this crime from watching Dateline until I read this book. As it turned out, I knew nothing. This fantastically researched book reveals every detail, every line of everyone’s journals, everyone’s secret visits, everything !!! All in riveting cultural and social context over the years that it took to close and prosecute the case. A must read for all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Puts True in True Crime

An analytical look at a case full of real people. Victims aren't innocent, and murderers aren't villains. Life, and murder, is messy. And religion takes a bad situation and makes it worse.

The book was well done, but didn't get me emotionally invested, so I'd give it a 3.5.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it

I'm returning this book because almost 1/4 of it is pages and pages of notes. Not only that, but for the price there are zero pictures. Honestly, publishers: when publishing an account of true crime you need pictures. So the book is skinny and expensive in hardcover, with tons of pages of notes (really?), thus it's going back. I can find this information on the net.
