My wife purchased the Rogue "Beatle Bass" for me last month as an early holiday gift. I had read may of the reviews and comparisons on this site and other bass guitar and music sites considering both the Hofner Icon, Epiphone and other similar basses. I also tried the Hofner and the Epiphone in local music stores, and talked to local bass players of my acquaintance. After all of this research, and after playing the Rogue after it arrived, this is an amazing instrument.
First, in looks. The finish was outstanding. There was one tiny finish flaw, and I only found it because I was so amazed at the quality that I literally examined it with a magnifying glass. The neck was straight and finished with the sunburst. I showed it to one of the professional bass players that I knew, and he thought it was one of the more expensive Hofners. He said that he would feel comfortable playing in his band's gigs.
Several reviewers have recommended replacing the strings, but the strings that came with it sound very good. It has a warm sound, but can also have a variety of different tones, if you play around with switch combinations. I wouldn't recommend playing slap techniques. The shorter scale really makes it a dream to play. It does have one of the shortcomings common to the basses of this design, in that the neck is heavier in balance than the body. This is an extremely minor issue.
We purchased the fitted violin bass hard case from Musicians Friend (thru Amazon) at the same time. I really recommend this. The case has high quality construction, and Musicians Friend shipped the bass in the case (a nice touch that protected it) since the case and bass were purchased together.
