I had been wanting to read this particular books for years, but had not made time until recently when I decided the school system and his therapy just werent addressing my son's needs.I myself have dyslexia, as does his father, as do 3/4 of his grandparents as does one off his uncles.each of us has a different set of symptoms and severit from highly functional to everything goes on audiotape. of those whose IQs have been "checked" way higher than ave (150, 135 and 185) we are a super creative set of people. but yet we struggle either time to time or always with reading, symbol (words) or meanings of what we read. . .I now understand why. I know now that our gifts come from Dyslexia, I should say this confirms my gut feeling. I also now know how to correct the issues without losing the gifts. Dyslexia can be turned off and on and the ability to toggle between off/on can become automatic! What's more, and greater still, is the program for doing so is easy, no flash cards or other "nonsense" that causes my son to act out, no repeat after me a hundred times, no cutsy little rhymes, songs or memory tricks, finally we can get rid of the alphabet song for alpabetizing. Nothing annoying or repeatitive. The Davis Methods taught in the book are conceptually simple, easy to learn, easy to teach and fun! All you will need is someone who can read and wants to help someone who can't (has trouble) who wants to learn and few thingsyou probably alreay have! no special equipment! Harness creativity and read. We plan to start his training next weekend. . .I am looking forward to getting him to grade level (and maybe beyond) before school starts this fall. I will post an update once we get there. I recommend this book to everyone and would love to see these methods taught in school!!! Too many kids struggle.

This is a must read! My son wasn't diagnosed with dyslexia until he was nearing the end of 4th grade. He's bright enough, he was always able to compensate for his dyslexia, and, as it has auditory characteristics, he did fine as long as he could read or hear the words out loud, but had much difficulty any time he had to read large passages silently. Well--welcome to school. I knew he was having to work too hard to get the great grades he was getting and every once in a while, he'd have a low grade that looked like he hadn't even read the work. I worked with him and worked with him and couldn't understand what was happening. It took over a year to pin-point the dyslexia and then we set upon trying to understand how to work with it to help him so he wouldn't have to work quite so hard. This book, The Gift of Dyslexia, is fabulous because it explains dyslexia in such a way that everyone can understand what it is, what it is like for someone who has it, and what makes it such a wonderful gift! In reading this book, my appreciation of the gift got stronger and stronger, it was the perfect way to help my son understand that there is nothing wrong with him, and we both appreciated the easy to learn ways to retrain the brain so words aren't so hard! The work with clay really made my son perk up, since he loves creating with clay. He has really made amazing strides in the few years since we purchased this book and is maintaining honor roll in middle school, feeling more confident than ever to pick up thick books and read them, and also feeling extra special to have a gift of vision that is beyond others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Explanation of Dyslexia

Very clear and concise on what can be an emotional and confusing subject. Not only does the auther (who is dyslexic) explain the symptoms fo dyslexia but many of the reasons behind those symptoms and the compensating behaviors that dyslexics will adopt in order to "survive" in school. The book then finishes with a series of drills to allieviate some of the more troublesome aspects of dyslexia.

Reading and writing are always going to be difficlt for our daughter, but with this book I have gained some insight into how she thinks and how she grapples with the chore that is reading and writing. Just understanding some of the compensating mechanisms that she has adopted to cope with her reading/writing issues has helped us to help her tremendously.

Finally, the auther stresses to not suppress or "harm" the tremendous benefits that a dyslexic mind can bring to a host of problem-solving and creative endeavors. The list of dyslexic super-achievers is long and illustrious and it is stems in part from their unique way they view the world and problems. The author stresses that becoming functional in reading and writing is certrainly attainable while retaining the gifts of creativitiy and outside-the-box problem-solving that many dyslexics excell out.

Well worth the money and a quick and easy read.
