Original "Chicago Style" Hot Dog

The "Chicago Style" hot dog history began with street cart hot dog vendors during the hard times of the Great Depression.

Money was scarce, but business was booming for these entrepreneurs who offered a delicious hot meal on a bun for only a nickel. The famous Chicago Style Hot Dog was born!

They'd start with a Vienna Beef hot dog, nestle it in a steamed poppyseed bun, and cover it with a wonderful combination of toppings: yellow mustard, bright green relish, fresh chopped onions, juicy red tomato wedges, a kosher-style pickle spear, a couple of spicy sport peppers and finally, a dash of celery salt.

This unique hot dog creation with a "salad on top" and its memorable interplay of hot and cold, crisp and soft, sharp and smooth, became America's original fast food and a true Chicago institution.

Vienna Beef was founded in 1893

Vienna Beef was founded in 1893. Austrian-Hungarian immigrants Emil Reichel and Samuel Ladany introduced their family frankfurter recipe at the legendary Columbian Exposition/World’s Fair. The hot dog was a hit, and Vienna Beef was born.

125 years later, we’re still making our sausages the old-fashioned way, with premium domestic beef and our original recipe, to the highest of quality standards and hickory-smoked for authentic flavor.

Chicago Hot Dogs are one of my favorites and one ingredient is that the sandwich must include Vienna Sport Peppers. The bad thing is that living in Florida, they are all but impossible to find in stores. Amazon has come to my rescue, they are available, and I have already had a few and they are genuine and are made in Chicago. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am now!

I really like this peppers. They are not sold where I live in Arizona, or I just can’t find them. But they are delicious!!!

What's a Chicago Dog? It's an all beef dog topped with these little peppers, Vienna green relish which you can also get on Amazon), fresh tomato and chopped onions, a spear of kosher dill pickle, mustard and a tad of celery salt. Very popular in Chicago, for good reason. Like no dog you've ever had. NO ketchup please, let the fresh tomatoes do the trick. SO GOOD!
Many recipes can be found online. Worth a try for a unique twist on your next BBQ. We like to bbq the dogs and lightly toast the buns. In Chicago they mostly steam them, but we prefer our western twist.

Gotta have 'em if you want the real Chicago dog. Great flavor and pretty zippy. Adds that heat level to a hot dog salad in a bun.

Only complaint is they are hard to come by, especially in Alabama, so you have to pay for them. Expensive for what they are.
