The program is seriously buggy, graphic aberrations show up periodically and crashes at least once every time the software is used. Amazon doesn't normally refund software purchases but they did this time.

I was able to create a very serviceable website using a provided template and had it published in about 30 minutes. The design elements are easy to edit and adjust, and the drag and drop features make it easy for the low level designer to get a good looking website built for themselves.

Adding features such as a Facebook activity widget, a contact form, twitter feed or other RSS feed, or countless other add-ons is a little more difficult to work in and does require an understanding of basic web design, but Xara has a bunch of good how-to videos available for just about anything you can think of that you may want to add to your site. There are a lot of positives I could write about, but rather than a 1,000 word review, I'll just say this is a great tool for novice webmasters. I used to use Dreamweaver but that is a lot more advanced and requires a good deal of knowledge so it's not recommended for beginners.

On the downside, there's not enough ability to edit the raw HTML. There are times when that would be helpful. Perhaps in a newer release they could consider allowing the user to get at the raw HTML engine. But so far it has not limited me from accomplishing what I've wanted to do. You can add HTML code to the body and head, but you're not privy to the full code; it simply adds it in a properties box. Again, it works, but most of us web designers want that raw editing ability. I assume Xara did this to limit the damage a novice could do with a few errant commands or keystrokes. And, working outside of the provided templates is a bit less intuitive, and in my opinion there just aren't enough unique templates available to work with.

The biggest downfall of the product is the inability to create responsive websites. These are quite desirable today; in short, the website adapts itself to the size of the user's display, which eliminates the need for a second mobile site and subsequent redirection. This is a great new enhancement to webpages and Xara not only doesn't do it, but they strongly oppose it and have no plans to add it later. That's a shame, really, and I'm sure I'll have to get a different web designer soon so I can use that ability.

The best-kept secret in web design

This program is noting short of outstanding, and it delivers what it promises. It allows you to take the included templates and manipulate them into web pages that are original and eye-catching, with the user knowing anything about coding or HTML. It runs circles around Web Easy (even though WE does deliver on its promise that you can have a web page up and running without knowing anything about web design or coding...but...Web Easy does not allow you to manipulate graphics like Xara). It does help if the user knows something about graphic design, but even if you don't, you can still create an outstanding web page). Anyone who claims Xara is "buggy" probably didn't wait until the company verified him before making the program fully operational. I designed my own web page to the exact specifications that I wanted (including audio files) and, because of the creative nature of Xara, it looks completely original, eye-catching, and user-friendly. Unless you know coding and html, THIS is the program to get (now known as Wed Designer 10).
