5.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds expections for speed, ease of use

I've used Pinnacle, Avid Studio, and now PowerDirector 12 Ultimate. PowerDirector is just as powerful an editor as Avid Studio but more intuitive to use and much faster when rendering a final mp4 file. Avid Studio has many more add-ons and templates, but PD 12 Ultimate comes with enough to provide as many choices as I can handle. I found the Avid library feature to be cumbersome and somewhat confusing when trying to start a new project from newly downloaded media. In contrast, with PD12 Ultimate I can quickly and intuitively load media into the project working area and not create bloat on my hard drive or in my project work area. My computer is a desktop with a 4th gen i7 processor and 12 GB RAM, and it renders mp4 files at 720p/60 very, very fast. I'm not having any problems with the program hanging or crashing. I am so impressed with the program that I bought a second version to load on my laptop (regrettably, only one license per version). The on-line community with free templates, etc. is OK, but for me was a little thin on sports-related offerings. However, the community offers a large volume and variety of wedding and family themes, so if that's your area of interest you'll likely find something to really augment the appearance of your video.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as ultimate as the box says it is.

I first got introduced to PowerDirector years ago when I got a bundled copy with my JVC Everio camcorder. Fast forward to an upgrade to Windows 8 and I needed to update the software.

There is something inherently wrong about a software suite that calls itself "Ultimate" that has grayed out, and adware functions. Try to edit audio, and you get prompted to buy another software package, try this or that other function, same garbage...

I know it is a marketing ploy, but let's face it, if you call your product ultimate, it had better be the ultimate, not Ultimate*(Some function may be added for additional costs, see inside the software after purchase for details.).

On the plus side, rendering is plenty fast with my AMD A8 laptop, it takes the funny JVC split mov sound and audio files just fine, allows me to work in a fashion very similiar to Macromedia Director that I learned so many years ago now (Macromedia got bought up by Adobe quite a while ago...).

Software install was a snap, activation was simple enough, and the software updates without too much hassle.

Output quality is somewhat quirky, at least in the demo version I used prior to my paid package coming in, it squished my video when I uploaded it to Youtube. I am not sure if Powerdirector or Youtube did that though.

Value and performance for the money, if it weren't for that stupid add this and that stuff in what is supposed to be an ultimate edition, would be 5 stars plus. But come on guys, either bundle the extra stuff in, or leave it out all together, don't do that stupid ad in my PAID app junk. I get enough of that from freeware.

Do you like to purchase a software product and have it crash constantly, and work extremely slow the few times it actually works? This program is for you then!

I have an i7-4770K with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, 16GB of RAM, an SSD system drive, conventional HDD for massive storage and a decent video card even by today's standards (eVGA GTX 460). This machine is basically a beast that laughs at most anything thrown at it. But PowerDirector seems specially engineered to utilize resources in the most inefficient and disastrous ways possible. 90+% of my raw footage is not even full HD just 720p from action cameras. PowerDirector struggles to churn through minutes of footage and predictably crashes multiple times during the simplest of editing tasks.

I do not have issues with any other application on this machine and I run some pretty demanding scientific stuff: Oracle VM VirtualBox with Ubuntu and Windows 10 tech preview (before it was released), PTC Creo Elements 3.0, Folding@Home, Blender 3D, COMSOL and ANSYS v11 (both FEA programs), and generally all sorts of video transcoding applications like MakeMKV, and Handbrake. I can run FEA solutions for hours solving for well over 50,000 degrees of freedom, or render (ray trace) complex scenes in Blender without any hiccups so I know the issue is not with my computer. PowerDirector will crash half a dozen times before I can finish editing a 5-10 minute video clip. Simply stated: it is garbage.

Pros:
- Came in a pretty box.
- Managed to produce a few projects by religiously saving every 5 seconds and eventually giving up on features that cause it to not render the project.
- Actually comes with a decent set of codecs for a variety of video formats.
- Can handle high speed footage and the resulting slow motion video is cool (if you can manage to get to a finished product that is).

Cons:
- Crashing, freezing, hanging, being stuck in an infinite processing loop (this is so often that one starts to believe it's the main function of this program)
- Redraw: OMG!!! How can a piece of software not even properly redraw its own window elements in the year 2015????? This is coding 101 people!
- Clumsy interface, often not intuitive.
- Nagging you to spend more money by upgrading (LOL sure let me get right on that!)
- It will make you want to destroy your computer with a baseball bat
