About this item

In this shocking memoir, a former FBI informant reveals what he learned from successfully infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in the backwoods of the Sunshine State, uncovering details about the hate group’s structure and its modern far-right spinoffs which are operating to achieve the same goal: inciting a second civil war by whatever violent means necessary.

“We need you back.”

It was a call FBI informant and former Army sniper Joe Moore never expected to get. He’d already infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan once before, and his contributions prevented an assassination attempt targeting then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. Moore nearly lost his life in the process. But now, the FBI needed Moore’s help once again.

In White Robes and Broken Badges, Moore reveals the astounding true story of how he became one of the most entrenched and valuable undercover agents in the FBI’s history. Gripping, told with astonishing detail, this heart pounding and darkly propulsive memoir vividly recounts how he infiltrated the “Invisible Empire” at the highest levels—not once, but twice—becoming a Grand Knighthawk, overseeing security, defense, and internal communications for the domestic terrorist group across Florida and Georgia. Moore makes clear how the seeds of violence and hate spawned the tragedy in Charlottesville, the failed January 6 Capitol coup, and the growing threat posed by extremist militias—including the Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, Three Percenters, and others.

Going undercover, Moore discovered the shocking connections between the KKK and law enforcement across Florida—police officers, prison guards, and sheriff’s deputies who all belonged to the Klan—and eventually exposed the terrifying presence of right-wing extremists throughout law enforcement today. Moore reflects on the steep personal costs of immersing himself in the Klan’s racist ideology and twisted rituals—and its effect on himself and his family—while secretly providing the FBI with invaluable information on the Klan’s inner workings, murderous plots, and plans for civil war.

With a foreword by Congressman Jamie Raskin, White Robes and Broken Badges is a comprehensive and unprecedented look at a growing threat in America and an urgent call-to-action—because ultimately, the answers to healing the divides in this country lie in its perilous history.

White Robes and Broken Bades: Infiltrating The KKK And Exposing The Evil Among Us by Joe Moore With Jon Land is a profound and serious read. The author went through a multiple number of ordeals while also carefully balancing his life as a family man. Some of the info relating to the author's time in the military and why they considered January 6, 2021 as only a metaphoric beginning pertaining to the theme of what they are writing about via the book (the preface section), Details pertaining to the attempted assasination of a former U.S President (page 87), Pictures of his wife and children (after pages 168),info pertaining to the approximate early years around when the Klan was founded (page 136), the history of involving some highly dangerous men (Thomas Driver, David Moran, Jamie Ward Charles Newcomb referenced in chapter 20) and more. I confess that I found out about this book around the summer 2024 timeframe via an online book review (I think CNN?) and after becoming curious when some online commenters were referencing the Killing In The Name of song by Rage Against The Machine in reference to references in White Robes and Broken Blades book).

This is a great and informative book on the interworkings of the KKK. I only hope that the prediction doesn't come true.

Details of an undercover investigation into law enforcement in Florida which revealed most LEOs are closeted members of the KKK and other white supremacy groups. Author literally stopped white supremacist LEOs in Florida from an assassination attempt inside a Florida prison. Shows how useless and corrupt law enforcement in Florida is.

3.0 out of 5 stars Important Book that Leaves Me Questioning the Events

This sure is an important book, simply by describing the incredible power and presence of the KKK and its deep penetration of law enforcement and the military. However, the book is not written very well, which would be OK, were it not for some 'facts' that just do not seem to rhyme with reality:
    1) With clearly proven preparations by the KKK for an assassination attempt on presidential candidate Obama, the FBI decides to do nothing, and leaves everything in the hands of one sole infiltrator. Nothing is mentioned in the book about potential backup plans by the FBI.
    2) The KKK has identified the perfect setting for assassinating presidential candidate Obama in their own backyard, and then calls it off, based on the infiltrator mentioning that he has spotted drones high in the sky a few days prior to Obama appearing at the targeted campaign rally.
    3) The informant is a welder, at least as the KKK knows, but always has ample time to meet up with the KKK boss.
    4) No inquiries from the KKK into the private life of the informant are mentioned. How can the informant get so close to (and trusted by) the KKK leader without disclosing anything from his private life?
    5) The informant cuts all ties to the KKK cell he has infiltrated and then infiltrates another cell 100 miles away, with another initiation with a KKK leader high up in the hierarchy. The leader of the first cell used to call the informant frequently on his phone. Did the phone calls stop? How did the first cell deal with the informant's disappearance. Did the informant change his phone, while maintaining his full legal name?

Joe Moore explains the behind-the-scenes foundation of what we are still experiencing in 2024.

I’m grateful for the sacrifices he and his family made to pull back the curtain and warn us that these threats are very real and unrelenting, always adapting.

It boils my blood these people have any power or following in this beautiful country. They are sore losers, hateful, vile, evil people.

I hope Mr. Moore makes a ton of money on this book to pay for what he and his family went through. It’s very well written.

I loved this book. It is so well written that I felt as if I was with Joe during all of his KKK encounters. I thought that I knew somewhat about the Klan but I learned so much. This is a very interesting insightful book which discusses the past the present and the future regarding racial injustice. I highly recommend it...what a ride.
