5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, try it now

This stuff is awesome in every way - super easy to work with, no weird flavors (hello soy curls), great texture reminiscent of ground meat, absorbs flavors wonderfully, and best of all it's a fantastic deal (200 calories per dollar). Made some taco filling out of it by sauteeing a bunch of onion and garlic, then adding 2 cups of TVP to 2 cups of water infused with dried chiles for like 2 minutes, then dumping that into the onions and adding a bunch of flavorings - soy sauce, MSG, cumin, paprika, black vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper. Delightful.

I eat meat, got this because of my pescetarian wife, but I'm excited to try it in bolognese for pasta or lasagna to see if I can switch to this for myself too just because of how cheap it is.

The texture and ease of cooking was gorgeous! 4 packs for $17 is actually a great value for money. The TVP is super versatile and has all the protein needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Consistently excellent quality. Won't use any other brand!

I adore Bob's Red Mill TVP and refuse to buy any other brand. I actually have tried other brands, in the past, and nothing matches the quality and consistency of Bob's Red Mill. I know when I order a bag of Bob's Red Mill I am not going to get a bunch of TVP dust or any off flavors. Instead, I am going to get consistent, intact pieces of TVP that taste good, smell good, and can be applied in a variety of recipes. This TVP is a little bit more expensive than some other brands, but it is completely worth it to me because it is a reliable, quality product. The only way it could be any better is if they used organic defatted soy flour to make it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great way to really stretch a meal even if meat eater. Expands greatly with moisture

Depending on how I am working with it, I dont soak it ahead of time. In fact, I rarely do. I often use it in taco filling or meat sauce. I sometimes only use TVP, but more often I use it to CUT back on meat. It really helps STRETCH a meal, bulk it out, by adding in the TVP. It blends seamlessly in with ground meat. So instead of using 2 lbs of meat, I use 1 lb plus the equivalent volume of this, or any ratio. No tight rules to follow.

In the above applications usually I just add extra water or broth to rehydrate it. I love adding beef bouillon or broth to give it that beefy flavor.

So I will cook the meat, then add in the TVP. Add in some water or broth. It will retain same shape, but get soft and expand to typical size of ground cooked beef. From there I then add in whatever seasons and other liquids.

Just want to reiterate: Keep in mind this expands! It doesnt look like much directly from the pouch, but once it rehydrates is grows quite a bit. Get a lot of bang for the buck.

Really lovely way to get extra nutrition, fiber, cut costs on meat, or way to cut back on meat if not fully vegetarian (ie meatless mondays), and helps bulk up a meal for cheap. If you happen to use a lot of ground meat, and want to shave some money of grocery bill, I highly recommend adding this in.

I really havent worked with it much beyond what I mentioned. I do enjoy non meat meals most of all, so I will look up some recipes using this style of TVP. But usually use other "forms" (strips, curls, chunks) for other dishes.

I once bought their 25 lb behemoth of a bag (great savings) but I find working from the pouches from this box easier. But nice option if you want to save even more and are willing to repackage into smaller containers.

Love Bob's Red Mill products. Been using for a couple of decades, all sorts of stuff. Trusted brand for me. I also like Anthony's texturized vegetable protein crumbles.

Last time I used this I found its gamey, weird taste and aftertaste to be unpleasant. This time I soaked it several times, not just the 2 or 3 times some advice recommends. After each soaking I squeezed the water out in a cotton hankie. I simmered it gently on the 3rd or 4th soak, and continued to soak and rinse in cool water. When the water was the color of very weak tea with only a hint of the original smell, I strained it well and dehydrated it back to it's original form. Actually, I left the first batch in the dehydrator too long. It looked almost burned and was very crunchy. As it turned out, it was a happy accident that gave it a nice browned color and taste, and made it able to absorb more of the flavored liquid I used to rehydrate it. It's a little labor intensive, but I'll process it in bulk next time and store it in the original packaging. Note: if you decide to do this, be very careful that it's completely dry before storing it or it will go bad, growing bacteria and/or mold. When rehydrating it, a combination of soy sauce, worsteshire sauce, Gravy Master, and mushroom powder (or whatever your experience or research calls for) can go a long way to make TVP approximate ground beef with no telltale soy taste.
I had it with sauteed peppers, garlic and onions on polenta tonight. It was very good. Shepherds (cottage) pie, tacos, and chili are on my agenda...

4.0 out of 5 stars TPV was good but also received wrong item

The TPV was a great selection for our vegan group during a week-long camping trip. It was enjoyed by everyone. The only issue I had was that I ordered 6 boxes of TPV and one box had Muesli, not what I was expecting.

Almost anything is possible with TVP. I highly recommend using with Vegetable Better than Bouillon paste. It has great flavor, is extremely economical and stores in the fridge for months. I use this for tacos, stuffed peppers, lasagna, beef stroganoff and spaghetti.

5.0 out of 5 stars High protein and absorbs the flavors of anything
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024
I researched this as an easy way to gain extra protein in my diet. I was surprised that it absorbed the taste of whatever you cook it in. I add it to ramen and it absorbed whatever the ramen flavor was.
So no weird tastes! I use it in oatmeal in the morning and in soups/ramen for lunch and hamburger and chicken for dinner. The texture is almost non existent but tasty. I have 2 more large bags left to go through and will double the amount next order. These are perfect for hiking as it weighs practically nothing.
