About this item

International bestselling author Jeffery Deaver delivers surprise after alarming surprise in an ingenious story about a serial killer, a detective, and a twisting duel of wits.

A serial killer is trolling a midwestern suburb. His tools: a hammer, a screwdriver, floral wire, a kitchen knife and, to complete his errand, a Russian nesting doll left behind as a calling card. From one grisly crime scene to the next, Detective Ernest Neville and his Russian Doll Killer task force follow. With few leads and his career on the line, Neville is driven to desperate measures to get to the core of this diabolical puzzle. Layer by layer, he’s getting closer to the final piece. Yet the only thing that’s certain in this game is the unexpected, and as citizens are targeted by one of the most reprehensible characters the idyllic town has ever seen, Neville can only wonder if his efforts will end in disaster—for himself, for his family and for the people he’s sworn to protect.

5.0 out of 5 stars TURNING POINT by Jeffery Deaver (A Short Story / Novella)

Wow, I think Mr. Deaver may be a genius. I honestly can't believe all he was able to accomplish with so few pages. In no way did I feel cheated or short changed by this brief but completely unpredictable and thrilling tale. I was not expecting to find anything funny about the hunt for a serial killer either, but a certain individual's acerbic wit had me laughing out loud. I appreciate dry humor and people who tell it like it is so I enjoyed that aspect.

I thought I was good at figuring mysteries out too, but not so much with this one. I had an inkling of where the end was going but the author still caught me off guard by throwing in several twists and a seemingly endless supply of suspense. It literally hooked me from the first chapter to the last and I savored every single second I spent reading it. My only complaint would be that it wasn't longer, but what a great way to spend an hour nonetheless =)

Length: The story ended at the 96% mark on page 60, and location 839.

Some unique twists in this short novella. The characters aren't necessarily ones that I would enjoy in a full novel but the story us written well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but too short.

Mr. Deaver's work is always pretty good, but this wasn't up to the par I'm used to. I was actually surprised when it ended.

Or, maybe I'm just used to Stephan King's 1200-page tomes. This took me a couple hours to read.

I'm not giving up on Deaver's books, but I'll call them as I see them.

Eg: Deaver's book "XO" is really amazing and I've read it three times...something I really never do. THAT'S a 5-Star book!

Author Jeffery Deaver is probably one of the best scary story writers in the entire universe. His characters are always three dimensional, with all the details to make them come to life. In this novel, his protagonist, his antagonist and variously connected individuals come together to take a gristly serial murderer (knives are SO messy) down, in a rather unusual, unexpected and nontraditional manner. Hey. If it works, don’t fix it! ????

It's a dark day for law enforcement. They have a serial killer on their patch. They're just a small operation, keeping drunks off the highway and wayward teens in school. They don't have the resources to hunt down a serial killer

He's called the Russian Doll Killer, RDK, because he leaves a set of the nesting dolls at the crime scene as his calling card. What he doesn't leave at the crime scene are clues. Investigators have no leads to follow.

Jeffery Deaver is one of my favorite authors. Love the short stories like this one for a break from time to time.

If you like detective, crime, or thriller/suspense stories, you will like Deaver. This book is only 79 pages long so a good one to try if you are unsure about Jeffery Deaver. I think once you read his work, you will be hooked.

You can't beat Amazon's Read and Listen for Free either. You can seamlessly move from reading to listening without losing your place.

This is a fun one to listen to. I ready listened to this once a while ago. I forgot the title and finally found it again. I usually never bother reading the same book twice. This is a worthy exception. It was so much fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, Fast, Escape Read With Serial Killer Twist

If you like Jeffrey Deaver's brash irreverent style, then this in-your-face thriller is a nice novella addition to your collection.

Michael Stendhal is an unlikable character: brusque, hypocritical, and socially insensitive. In other words a true sociopath and prime candidate for a serial killer. The community is tense from several gruesome murders, dubbed by the press as the Russian Doll Killer or "RDK."

The author's creative storytelling and imaginative endings are always unpredictability satisfying an often quirky. Deaver's coarse dialogues define his character's uncouth manners and tone here as in his other works, both distracting and probably unnecessary.

This is definitely a one-time read once you've made it to the end. Although Audible's narration was helpful, the book's short length makes this addition less critical, but I liked having it.

Great for a lunchtime read or quick diversion.
