About this item

The raw, candid, unvarnished memoir of an American icon. The greatest movie star of the past 75 years covers everything: his traumatic childhood, his career, his drinking, his thoughts on Marlon Brando, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor, John Huston, his greatest roles, acting, his intimate life with Joanne Woodward, his innermost fears and passions and joys. With thoughts/comments throughout from Joanne Woodward, George Roy Hill, Tom Cruise, Elia Kazan and many others.

In 1986, Paul Newman and his closest friend, screenwriter Stewart Stern, began an extraordinary project. Stuart was to compile an oral history, to have Newman’s family and friends and those who worked closely with him, talk about the actor’s life. And then Newman would work with Stewart and give his side of the story. The only stipulation was that anyone who spoke on the record had to be completely honest. That same stipulation applied to Newman himself. The project lasted five years.

The result is an extraordinary memoir, culled from thousands of pages of transcripts. The book is insightful, revealing, surprising. Newman’s voice is powerful, sometimes funny, sometimes painful, always meeting that high standard of searing honesty. The additional voices—from childhood friends and Navy buddies, from family members and film and theater collaborators such as Tom Cruise, George Roy Hill, Martin Ritt, and John Huston—that run throughout add richness and color and context to the story Newman is telling.

Newman’s often traumatic childhood is brilliantly detailed. He talks about his teenage insecurities, his early failures with women, his rise to stardom, his early rivals (Marlon Brando and James Dean), his first marriage, his drinking, his philanthropy, the death of his son Scott, his strong desire for his daughters to know and understand the truth about their father. Perhaps the most moving material in the book centers around his relationship with Joanne Woodward—their love for each other, his dependence on her, the way she shaped him intellectually, emotionally and sexually.

The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man is revelatory and introspective, personal and analytical, loving and tender in some places, always complex and profound.

This memoir was published after Mr. Newman passed away. It was drawn from a series of interviews from him and a large number of family and friends. It was his family that pushed for the publication of this book.

What I like most about the book are the portions in the words of Paul Newman. That's a large part of the print and it tells a lot about the man and his life. On subject matter the book really delivers!
For me, some of the most interesting material was about Mr. Newman's childhood. We know movie stars for their screen work. In this case, the movie star's family history was a bit of a surprise. And remarkable.
I think Paul Newman was both ordinary and extraordinary. He was a terrific actor but yet he seemed to view himself as "ordinary" which says volumes about his humility.
I found the entire book to be entertaining and very well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Newman's Own Story

I'm a lifelong fan of the late Paul Newman, and also an avid reader of autobiographies. I was shocked to find this title and realize most of it is in his own words along with input from many friends, coworkers and family members!

Some time before he passed away, the author recorded many interviews with Mr. Newman and others, but the project of transcribing and assembling the material was postponed and nearly forgotten until years later. I Am SO glad it was not forgotten completely!

His words, along with the input of those who knew him (some knew him well, some only thought so) makes for an enlightening story. There are moments that made me smile, laugh out loud, tear up or shake my head over what he was able to accomplish .

Paul Newman was an intensely private man and more than once I felt like an eavesdropper, but I'm so happy that his family chose to complete this project. He was a product of his generation and values. He struggled with personal and professional conflicts but ultimately touched millions of lives through his work, civic activities and charitable commitments. And by opening up about so many things I'm sure he accomplished what he intended, filling in the blanks and making himself more accessible to his loved ones.

Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sad that he never found recovery from his addictions

Paul Newman, Iike so many other addicts, was a highly intelligent and very talented person. Sadly, and as this story conveys ( even cherry picked to present the best) Newman, with all of his striving for integrity, his work ethic and his hard earned talent, was your every day alcoholic. Due to his alcoholism, his insight was lacking. Which makes for an unsatisfying story. Hence, 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally consistant with Paul Neuman's movies.

I thought this book would show a terrible evil person who went again all I knew of Paul Newman because of the reviews. Not so. This book is right on point and I enjoyed it. Newman's Deep sadness, anger and an inability to figure out the world coupled with a strong dose of honesty. He is a hero that I would not ever want to meet.

My favorite movie of all times is the Verdict which says it all. A very isolated individual with inner demons. The character (and Newman in his life) pops his head out to find he is in a large stream of water running fast and he is doing good despite his demons.

I'm a Paul Newman fan. But notice that he hits a woman many of his films, Absence of malice, the verdict, etc. When he has to laugh in Butch Cassidy its so off it stands out. In fact his role in Butch Cassidy is odd, too cheerful. He's great as a very good looking enigma, Cat on a hot tin roof, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict etc. Did I miss something? Paul Newman is great to look at but scary. This book confirms the conflict. In every photo with his mother he looks happy. Yet he hated her. Probably something there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting...but

I was so looking forward to reading Paul Newman's autobiography...and then I did. It was not exactly what the stellar reviews were claiming. Although I certainly enjoyed learning about Paul's life and career both on and off the screen, it wasn't nearly as in depth or intimate as I would have liked. I read biographies almost exclusively, so I was hoping for much more. Interesting and enjoyable when Paul does go a bit deeper, but a bit lightweight as far as autobiographies go--which is a shame because Paul certainly had a rich and multi-layered life. There were a few revelations about his inner thought processes, but much of his life is merely hinted at, glossed over, or by-passed completely.
But then I prefer Barbra Streisand's in-depth tome, Heather Clark's "Red Comet" (Sylvia Plath bio), or "Jennifer Juniper," Jenny Boyd's revealing and highly interesting autobiography.
I just wanted, well...MORE!
