NOTE: I have been using various Home Design Software since the early 1990's and have built a beautiful ranch house with much less complicated software 17 years ago so I'm not a rooky at this.
Update: 10/20/2023 How things turned out. I never did master the roof (you can see it in the picture) but pressed on to finish my ranch house design. I turned it over to an architect to make up the actual approved plans. I was actually a bit surprised that the software prints were good enough to convert over to plans with a minimum number of questions on the design. I supplied them with screen prints to clarify any unclear areas. (The walk throughs were invaluable to be able to see what the design actually looks like) Then I found a good builder and had it built. It turned out great. This was quite a project for someone in their 70's but overall, I enjoyed the whole designing a house aspect of it and the software did its job so I'm giving it 1 more star.
A few things to consider on your design: I used a 3' 6" wide hallway and staircase; it makes getting around and moving much easier. I also had 3' doors installed on all rooms to be able to use a wheelchair if that becomes a requirement (hopefully not). I added a 7' picture window over the sink with a 3' window on the side. More money but you won't regret it when the turkeys and deer come to play. You'd be surprised how much time you actually spend at the kitchen sink enjoying the view. I also made space for a freezer in my pantry just off of the kitchen, very handy. Plan on a bigger garage (mine is 24' x 27') you'd be surprised how fast that space gets filled and it's also nice to be able to get around your truck if you have one.
Have fun - the finished house will make it all worthwhile.

Since nothing is perfect, there are a few shortcomings. Perhaps there are ways to overcome them, but I haven't found them yet:
- It has a nice spline curb tool that helps me model the existing curbs in my yard. However, it is very difficult to get the curves just right as they existing in my yard right now. The end points want to jump to preset coordinates which appear to be a foot or more apart, making exact modeling of what already exists in my yard impossible. Again, maybe there is a way to make those preset coordinates closer together, but I haven't found it.
- I built the shell of my home with the tool. SInce I don't car about the existing interior, I just need to see how the house feels in relation to the yard. To model the house exterior, I would build an exterior wall (easy). What started to become irritating is that the length would adjust itself automatically when I connected the next perpendicular wall segment. This took a bit of work on my part to ensure the dimensions were reset to what I had intended. In addition, end points seemed to jump to preset coordinates. This wasn't too bad as the coordinates were pretty close together, but they were still a few 16th of an inch apart.
- The plant selection is fairly limited. There are enough to give the look and feel to see how plants in general will work, but don't expect to find the exact plant and flower color combination you have your heart set on. There are additional library packs that can be purchased to expand the selection, but I guess I had expected a wider variety for the couple of hundred bucks I paid already.
Other than that, the 6 hours I've invested in learning the software and creating the yard design have been well spent. I'd buy the software again if I could turn back time - that tells you I'm happy with it!
