About this item

When Mia shows up for the interview at a well-known architecture firm, she only has 27p, a squashed loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter to her name. She needs this job. Even if she is scared to death of the owner of the company.

Max has made a name for himself as
that grumpy northern architect off Dreams Homes (the most popular property design programme in the UK), after he told the famous host that designing affordable, environmentally friendly homes “wasn’t rocket science” and that most of the other projects featured on the programme were for “reight poncy bastads who want to spend a grand on a shite tap.” It turned out that the whole gorgeous-but-rough-around-the-edges-Yorkshire-man vibe was just what the country was looking for – the episode had gone viral and Max was the new, extremely reluctant, pin-up of the building industry.

But to Mia, huge, grumpy men aren’t sexy, they're simply terrifying. She knows from experience that even men of average size can be dangerous. If she wasn’t so desperate, she’d run. She’s used to running. Running away is Mia’s special talent, together with invisibility – survival techniques she’s perfected over the years. So, she’ll put up with Max and his moods, ignore him calling her a
teen emo freak (he’s not to know that her black hair used to be honey blonde or her heavy eyeliner isn’t by choice) and just bloody well jog on. Just try to survive. Try to hide.

It’s easy to hide when nobody really
sees you. But what happens when Max finally opens his eyes?

Unperfect a full-length, contemporary, grumpy boss office romance.

Please be aware - occasional swearing and trigger warning for domestic violence.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Characters just jump off the page. I didn't start reading this until gone midnight and had finished it before lunch the following day. My only regret is that I will have to wait ages for Yaz and Heath's story.

What a whirlwind of a read. I loved it. Five stars, a romance with real people, genuine themes and multi stranded plots.

This book was amazing and Mia is definitely one of the strongest characters ever!

A true slow-burn with all the feels. Mia is fragile, yet resilient. Max is gruff on the outside with a soft and gooey interior. It’s clear that they’re perfect for each other, and I loved watching their story unfold. I recommend this book to those who are love a sweetly angsty romance that features a woman on the run falling in love with an unexpected hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible, heart-wrenching read

I could not put this down. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this, but what I got was so much more than I had ever anticipated. This is by far the best book I've read this year. I wasn't expecting to cry. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with these characters.

This is so much more than a typical romance novel - the sex scenes are brief and don't include a ton of detail, but the amount given was enough. I was not left disappointed or wanting more. This book wasn't about sex. It was about living through and overcoming years of mental and physical abuse. It wasn't all sad though. There were some light parts to the book, scenes that had me laughing. The British slang took a bit to get used to, but I'm still chuckling over some of the words and I may start stealing some of them in the future. Ponsy cockwomble..

Mia's story is sad. She managed to escape her abusive husband after suffering a fractured shoulder and multiple broken ribs at his hand, and was able to get a job as an IT consultant. The characters (other than the grumpy boss) at this office are fun-loving and light-hearted, sometimes to the extent of doing yoga in the lobby.. kind of ridiculous but probably needed so as not to make the story TOO dark.

Mia hid her true identity, hid her past, and hid her injuries. But she couldn't hide her fear and discomfort. Many reading the book are probably rolling their eyes, thinking 'how could these people ignore the signs right in front of them?' But that's the sad, scary truth about domestic violence, all too often the signs are seen and ignored, or brushed off and forgotten. Even if an odd reaction here or there may get noted, it's later forgotten as the victim has had years of hiding and pretending that things are ok.

Enter sexy, grumpy boss Max, who was (yes a bit cliché) actually a huge teddy bear. He was rough and spoke his mind but had the best heart, and with his recent history of being burned by a woman, he was even rougher and moodier towards Mia, because as soon as he first saw her he felt some interest towards her. Definitely NOT love at first sight. But an interest. So he had his guard up a bit too. Even in her terrorized state she could appreciate a pretty face, and she felt some level of attraction to him too, even though he scared her most of the time.

Eventually it got out that Mia was homeless, and had been 'living' at the office for weeks. She contracted pneumonia and subsequently went into sepsis due to being malnourished and her broken ribs, so was rushed to the hospital where Max learned a little more about her situation. Not enough. Still no clue she was abused. Having no where else to stay, Max eventually invited her to stay at his house. Enter Max's 17 year old stepson Ted, whose mother basically abandoned to Max while she went off to live the life she wanted. So Ted hated pretty much everyone and took it out on Max, who viewed Ted as his own kid.

Mia's story slowly came out more and more, along with me wiping my tears away as her story unfolded. Her inner circles of coworkers/friends finally learned her situation, and not long after Max realized it too. Together they worked with her in different ways to get her the support she so desperately needed. Throughout this whole time she had been getting closer to Max, beginning to trust him, and like him more than just a passing fancy. Their feelings slowly come to light and they eventually get intimate.

Enter evil husband/abuser. Without going into a ton of detail he appeared back in her life, made her feel helpless again, and she barely escaped with her life (again). But she didn't give up. She never gave up. Mia kept fighting, using the tools she had learned from her new friends.

Mia especially is SO well written. Her insecurities, her fears, her flashbacks and reactions, they made my heart bleed. In reading the afterword, it turns out the author Susie Tate works with victims of domestic abuse. She sees their stories and their coping. And she was able to transcribe that into a beautifully sad story about overcoming the near impossible. So very well done.

This book was so good! The romance was beautiful and i loved the banter. The side characters were fantastic... I especially loved Rodge :) The DV was portrayed believably and definitely had my emotions going haywire. There were quite a few grammatical errors, but the story was so good that they didn't bother me. Excited to read the next one ????

The plot and romance are great and the glimpse into the mind and emotions of not only the person involved but those who care for them in abusive situations is respectful and honest of both the dangers and the damage people in those situations face and the strength they need to both survive escape and thrive a situation which is horribly more common and more excused with victim blaming than should ever be tolerated

I really wanted to give this book more stars. I loved the characters and the story line. However I found it slow. If it hadn't been for that I would've given it at least 4\5. It is well worth the read.

I wasn’t sure what I expected from this author/book but it wasn’t that!

This was an intense read if you have DV triggers. But it was so beautifully written to show Mia overcoming her trauma and that all men are not the same. Max was so sweet and kind. It really was a very good book. I didn’t realize it would have heavy British terminology or slang. I felt a little lost half the time they were talking which was a little frustrating. Overall, good book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hands Down…Amazing
Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2024
I’ve read so many books in the last couple of weeks. And this is hands down one of the best. The characters are lovable, raw, and real. I found myself feeling what Mia felt, bracing myself, and then breathing a sigh of relief at how Max’s patience was so strong. His understanding and gentleness was beautiful. Teddy, who I imagined I would dislike more and more was a shocking surprise at how much I loved him by the end of the book.
Excited to read the next book about Heath & Yaz.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional and Necessary
Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2024
This book was outside of my normal reads. It was emotion evoking. I think it was a very necessary story that many people should read. Being kicked and beaten down but having the ability to overcome and fight back in a realistic manner made this book stand out. I loved that the characters were believable and no unnecessary over the top heroism was portrayed.
