5.0 out of 5 stars Great Clairinet. Great Price
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2018
This arrived very quickly. The instrument works beautifully. My kid has small hands so has some trouble making sure that the holes are fully covered so it doesn't squeek but that has made her a better player I think. Need to keep coaxing her to keep practicing and the more she practices the more confident she gets. The product is just great. The clarinet is like any other clarinet so she does not stand out as different (very important in middle school). Even though her keys are gold and other kids are silver, it's not enough of a difference to make a difference. The case is just fine as well. We have had this for a few months and the case is starting to get frayed a bit but otherwise it's holding up to everyday use very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clarinet for beginner band student

I bought this clarinet for a beginner band player in JR high school. The instructor approved the clarinet to be used in band. I was amazed at the quality and beauty of the sound of music being played at the band concert. Amazingly, no one at the performance heard any "squidward squeaks" and my child was not trying to hide herself behind other band members. She was very impressed with the music she was playing. Great product for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bona-fide Instrument... Depending...

First of all, it's difficult to rate this "instrument" in terms of stars. I'm an experienced clarinetist and rate it 4 stars because it is an exceptional value, and an experienced clarinetist will be able to play this well and will also appreciate the price point.

I understand the logic for a beginner who wants to try out a cheap instrument to see if they'll like learning it, but honestly, this instrument is probably too difficult for a beginner to play. An experienced player will know how to make adjustments to embouchure and instrument care in order to get it to play well. If you play another wind instrument and are considering this one, keep this in mind. So this review is for the experienced player, and this clarinet is well suited for its purpose.

The instrument does play in tune. You must use the proper barrel that it comes with. Use the shorter barrel for B-flat and the longer one for A. Be prepared to use all the cork grease and more the first time you assemble the instrument. All new clarinets require this, but this one especially. You'll have to grease, insert a bit, take it out, grease some more, reinsert, etc... until all the joints are flush. You will have to use pressure, but don't force it. Forget the included reeds. You can use Rico Royals or better for a major difference in tone and playability. Reeds above 2.5 don't work well with the included mouthpiece. You can use your own mouthpiece of course, and this will make the instrument sound demonstrably better, but then you won't have a cool colored mouthpiece (unless you opted for the black model in which case this is be a good option.) I bought the pink model and will keep the pink mouthpiece because it looks cool, and it plays well enough. As someone mentioned in a previous review, the instrumental does get easier to play the more it is used. It needs about a five minute warm-up every time it is played before it starts to become reasonably playable. Be patient with this.

I am calling this a bona-fide instrument because it does actually play music and you can pretty much include yourself as a clarinetist in most situations. You'll have to apply some extra effort to obtain a respectable tone, but if you already play, you'll be able to do this. Again, using your own mouthpiece and reeds will greatly improve this instrument if the color is not an issue for you.

We bought this instrument and other similar colorful instruments to create a fun colorful ensemble. It's a lot of fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's a hot glued toy, not a real working instrument, but makes a great lamp!

Although beautiful to look at, that is the only thing this junk is. It isn't a real clarinet. It is covered in hot glue strands, the keys are misplaced, the pads are not aligned, and the screws were the wrong size and sharp. This toy sounds like horrible duck in heat. I have 29 years of clarinet experience and bought this as a fun novelty, expecting it to at least play in the actual clarinet register. The sound ceases upon hitting register and throat keys. Buying this will instanstly waste your money, time and effort and if you want this for your child, they will give up too soon. This isn't a real clarinet, it's a plastic, hot glued toy. DO NOT BUY! I am still waiting on my $100 refund! On a side note, I would only recommend this purchase if you want to turn it into a lamp or perhaps a neat way to hang your clothes on. Seriously. Save your money. Buy your kiddo a cheap used wood clarinet on craigslist for $100 instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Product, works well.

I think I like this clarinet?! Only had it about a week but my first impressions are good. The quality and fit of all parts, keys and pads are very good. Every note that I am capable of playing sounds solid and whole. Appearance wise, it is a very nice looking instrument. I will be playing it on two jazz gigs this week for the first time and this will be the true test for me. My only issue thus far is the instrument seems to play a little flat. However, that could be me. I am primarily a saxophone player and I have pretty bad embouchure regarding the clarinet. One word of advice to novice players regarding any new instrument; take some time before you snap to judge it. It takes quite awhile to get the right combination of reed, mouthpiece and barrel to get a clarinet (or any woodwind) performing to ones satisfaction. I think this instrument would work quite well for a novice player, adequate for a semi-pro like me. I'm taking my trusted old clarinet to the gigs for awhile just in case but I want this new instrument work and I think it will do the job. I've got it playing well in practice but I play much differently live it's hard to tell what is going to happen. Just added this update (03.13.19), have used the clarinet on several gigs now and it is working well! Old Yamaha is going into retirement...
