About this item

Homicide Detective Eve Dallas hunts a killer who turns a wedding party into a murder scene in the next novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author, J.D. Robb, Passions in Death.

On a hot August night, Lt. Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, speed through the streets of Manhattan to the Down and Dirty club, where a joyful, boisterous pre-wedding girls’ night out has turned into a murder scene. One of the brides lies in a pool of blood, garroted in a private room where she was preparing a surprise for her fiancée—two scrimped and saved-for tickets to Hawaii.

Despite the dozens of people present, useful witnesses are hard to come by. It all brings back some bad memories for Eve who once suffered an assault in the very same room—but she’d been able to fight back and survive. She’d gotten justice. And now she needs to provide some for poor young Erin.

Eve knows that the level of violence and the apparent premeditation involved suggest a volatile mix of hidden, heated passion and ice-cold calculation. This is a crime that can be countered only by hard detective work and relentless dedication—and Eve will not stop until she finds the killer who destroyed this couple’s dreams before the honeymoon even began…

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good story

If you're familiar with this series, you'll know there are stories where Eve Dallas figures out who the murderer is long before anyone else does. And there are stories where one murder leads to a second and a third, and maybe even a fourth, and the pattern reveals the criminal. And there are stories where landmarks blow up, or life-changing events happen in major characters' lives, or you see some of the story through the eyes of the perpetrator.

This is not any of those stories. This is a straight police procedural, where it takes a long time, and a great deal of careful detective work, to identify the person who committed one (and only one) murder, and that case is the central focus of the book. And it works very well.

I wouldn't want every story in the In Death series to be like this one. I enjoy the variety of stories JD Robb gives us, and I hope we get to see more about the lives of the many beloved supporting characters in the next book and the ones after that. But this time, it was great to see a straightforward story about some excellent detective work.

To be fair, I’m an avid J D Robb fan, and I own all 59 books on Kindle (and many in hardback). I’ve read and reread them all. The characters are like family, and I’m always anxious to see what they’re up to. Some of the books build to a heart-stopping, breakneck pace. Others, like this one build slowly and methodically, letting you savor the joys of a great whodunnit. Whether you’re starting here or adding to your collection, Passions in Death is a great read. I recommend your pre-order book 60 while you’re shopping, Bonded in Death.

What an interesting book, and a more interesting subject matter. This was a more slower paced In Death read. It had a quiet feel to it as opposed to other books in the series. Eve has to solve a case that clearly presents as a crime of passion. Was it an outside person or a member of a close-knit group of friends? An enjoyable read as we get updates on how the house project is coming along, and it explores Eve's dawning awareness of how good it feels to be married.

I adore this series. I am a long time fan of the Eve Dallas Super cop and her beautiful ruthless former thief and mogul husband Rourke. This is the perfect type of book for a day in the sun or on the deck with a glass of wine or snuggled in watching the snow fly. Good read light fun well written good characters nice gentle plot twists little spicy without being crude. I look forward to many more cases with the interesting detective and her "tribe".

PASSIONS IN DEATH was a great read! I was completely hooked from start to finish. The way the story delves into the connections between the characters and the killer is so intriguing.

The setting of the dead and Eve’s previous near-death experience in that very same space really adds a chilling layer to the story. The mystery had me coming back for more!

Overall, PASSIONS IN DEATH was a fantastic read and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Eve in the series.

A good study in human relationships. People wear masks very successfully most of the time but not always. Delving deeper into a person’s connections with others can be very telling, and it proved to be so in this case. Also, it’s wonderful to see Eve enjoying and acknowledging her marriage and other close relationships. I’ve loved the character development of the main characters and can’t wait for the next saga!

This was published on Tuesday, I had it downloaded on Wednesday, and 90% finished before going to bed. I knew I was saving the best for last. Finished it while fixing and eating brekky. I knew whodunnit from his hovering behavior towards the bereaved early on after the murder. Eve finished him off and book ended perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reads more like a Nora Roberts

There are J. D. Robb characters and settings here, descriptions and familiar tropes tossed it, but the underlying premise is that of a bunch of late 20s/early 30s girlfriends with romantic complications.
