For the curious and technically minded individual - learn what Hacking REALLY means
Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2019
"Hacking" had always been described in such a negative way by the media and as a result totally misunderstood by most of the general public as an evil thing to be eradicated. Really glad this publication is still available. I hadn't paid much attention in it's earlier days but saw it in Amazon and decided to give the Kindle version a try. Every issue is very interesting, definitely worth the very small cost of the Kindle issues. This isn't all "dark web" stuff, it addresses many computer and network security concerns and so much more, and is pretty much white hat with some great explanations of black hat stuff for educational purposes. Way too much to fully describe here - just give it a try!

Knowledge and snark

I picked up this subscription on a lark. I am an IT professional with interest in strong cybersecurity. I have found that hacker culture within its confines has taught me much, only from one issue. A hack not only applies to computer code but also to anything we do to make the tasks in life easier. A recent article on a popular social media platform was impressive. I one day hope to have this level of skill in decompiling and looking at the base code of a program. It seems to be largely freelance-driven, but the letter section fills much of its content, and that is where the real fun begins. The writers are not mean, but they have little interest in a writer's self-promotion or stupidity. As time a money permit, I will purchase the back issue catalog. Love it

Essential reading

it's 2600, a legendary print magazine and thus granted protection under the US constitution, useful given that it discusses the weaknesses and flaws of computer systems & phone systems near and far. If you wand to know what the IT system of the Federal Bureau of Corrections looks like, or how to Blue Box, (building Blue Boxes is how Apple computer got their start in life) in the modern era this is the magazine for you. It can be hard to find in print. I remember wandering into a small cubicle newsagent in an out of the way through passage in Vienna airport and finding on the shelf. I bought it on spec, even though I already had it.
The only real issue is that digital subs, unlike physical subs, do not have the ability to post ads in the magazine itself. but the fee is very reasonable and you're supporting a good cause. When Mitnick went to jail, it was the 2600 crew that spent the last hours with him, and delivered him to the door. They organise the H.O.P.E conference too. Recommended.

The best little magazine you've never heard of ...

The original and still the best information to keep in your arsenal for the war against privacy. First hand accounts of what's broken and what needs to be done to fix it. If you're counting on industry, corporations, or the government to fix things -- don't. Educate yourself and take the steps necessary to ensure your own privacy. To those not considering it THE BEST place to start, THEY'RE WRONG. Start here -- knowledge is power. Become empowered.

Illuminates the hacker mentality
Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2022
2600 Magazine has been around almost as long as blue boxes and hackers; it has a storied history. Today IT Security is a professional career field taught both in universities and by industry, but informal hackers still are among us. 2600 Magazine serves as an in-print moderated social website where hackers submit informational articles and correspondence for publication. There's much (sometimes esoteric - minus one star) technical detail here complete with references for further study, but IMO 2600 Magazine's greatest contribution is illuminating the hacker mentality. The articles and correspondence discuss HOW and WHY people became hackers and their usually-benign goals, IMO good perspective and good understanding for anybody seriously involved in Information Technology.

For hackers only
Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013
I didn't get much out of this for myself, and I won't subscribe. Of course, I'm not a hacker, and so it's a little too technical and dry for me (I'm more of a Popular Science guy, and I suppose I was expecting a little more of that style).
Nevertheless, it had great tech info for hackers, and would probably be riveting for someone with technical chops. That isn't me, but I can see the quality of the offering.

The one saving grace of having blumpf out of the white house was supposed to be media shifting away from their TDS nonsense, but in April 2021 they publish some nonsense out of touch article pretending to have something to say about politics while just mirroring more of the same tired debunked nonsense. Mental illness shouldn't deperson someone, but it shouldn't be ignored either. Seek help 2600 editors, you're better than this.
