About this item

My Fair Lady meets the classic teen film She's All That in this charming and swoony new rom-com from Brian D. Kennedy, author of A Little Bit Country. Perfect for fans of What If It's Us and She Gets the Girl.

Wade Westmore is used to being in the spotlight. So when he’s passed over for the lead in the spring musical, it comes as a major blow—especially when the role goes to his ex-boyfriend, Reese, who dumped him for being too self-involved.

Shy sophomore Elijah Brady is used to being overlooked. Forget not knowing his name—most of his classmates don’t even know he exists. So when he joins the stage crew for the musical, he seems destined to blend into the scenery.

When the two have a disastrous backstage run-in, Elijah proposes an arrangement that could solve both boys’ problems: If Wade teaches Elijah how to be popular, Wade can prove that he cares about more than just himself. Seeing a chance to win Reese back, Wade dives headfirst into helping Elijah become the new and improved “Brady.”

Soon their plan puts Brady center stage—and he’s a surprising smash hit. So why is Wade suddenly less worried about winning over his ex and more worried about losing Elijah?

Thank you Balzer + Bray and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. This book is so swoony!! Wade is handsome and popular but always seems to come in short compared to his brothers in his parents eyes. Not to mention he just got dumped by his equally handsome and popular boyfriend for be self-absorbed. Elijah is used to being invisible but would loved to have friends and not feel so alone. In his hopes to become friends with another gay boy in his grade he joins the stage crew of the schools Spring Musical. The musical that Wade happens to be in. When the two literally collide on stage Elijah forms a plan, Wade can help him be more confident and make friends. Wade agrees, this is an excellent chance to show his ex that he can care about others, just in time for Prom. But as Elijah and Wade spend more time together can Elijah concur his fears? Can Wade win back his ex? Or maybe the closeness will change things? I like both Wade and Elijah! Everything Elijah feels hit home for me as I share a lot of those feelings! And my heart hurt for Wade multiple times in the book! It’s sweet, charming, and funny! I highly recommend this for rom com fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Happy Read

In my search for a new LGBTQ novel to start reading I found this one advertised in an email from an online book store so I decided to give it a shot. I am from Minnesota and this story is based in MN and I love local books.

This story is about a prideful theater student named Wade who loses his boyfriend after being told he’s selfish. He meets an underclassman named Elijah who joins the theater crew to try and fit in. Wade believes if he helps Elijah become popular and a part of the friend group that he can show he’s not selfish and win his ex back.

I thought it was an okay storyline. It was all predictable but at least it was for the most part a happy story that was entertaining. There are not any slow parts and the characters are likeable. I do think this might’ve been a more interesting storyline if it were set more college aged then High School. Just an idea for a future spinoff.

I’d recommend this story if you’re looking for some light and easy reading. I also support as it has a positive representation of the LGBTQ community which is needed in these troubling times.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet, Clever Romance

I gave this a read before gifting it to a teen. It may be considered a YA romance, but adult readers will certainly enjoy it as well. It is charming and funny, yet well grounded in feelings we all know and understand. The characters quickly move beyond any stereotypes they may seem to be and experience believable growth over the course of the book. The angst is low but is a great representation of the pressures of teen life, especially for gay kids. The two protagonists may be out, loved by their parents, and accepted by their peers, but they still have the doubts, self-recrimination, and drive for perfection that so many gay teens experience growing up in a society that didn't evolve with them in mind.
Mild spoilers below in case you have concerns about your teens reading this.
There is some cursing, but nothing more than your average teen is already well aware of. There is teen drinking, but it isn't glamorized. Sex is considered, but not acted upon.

The romance was good. The story line and content seemed very young adult.

I wanted to like this but it just dragged on too long. There was very little character development and very little relationship development between the two MCs before Elijah/Brady went off on his own. And the secondary relationship development (which I won’t mention bc it’s a spoiler) is entirely unrealistic when it comes to the dynamics between these three characters and the reaction of the MC to this relationship. I pushed through it but it was a no for me.

This book will, for those a decade or more past high school graduation, take you right back to all the uncertainties, misperceptions and emotional struggles of being a teenager. Not that I would ever want to go back there but Brian’s writing pulls one back in and has you enjoying it. Well written and engaging characters who make you long for a sequel.
