I've been buying this wine-making kit for a few years now. The wine quality is excellent compared to others I've tried. Over the years the kit has changed a little bit so I thought I'd put a couple notes out in case you're a return customer like I am. First, the raw grape juice quality is excellent as always, and that's the most important thing. A couple differences I've seen over the past few years is the instructions have changes. The older instructions (I've kept copies because I write notes on them) include a secondary fermentation step, whereas the newer instructions do not. Seems an odd change to me. I tried using the new instructions without that secondary step and the wine turned out good but when I tried again adding that step back in, the results were better. The other thing that has changed with these wine kits is the lack of labels for bottles. The older kits included packs of bottle labels and I've used those. It's not terrible that they're not there, but I do miss them. So, I guess that's about it. Still an excellent wine kit and I will keep buying them. Still recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, great price, need to figure out how to tweak it better.

I struggle with these red wine kits. This is the second I've tried and I'm still not getting the taste I want- I'm wondering if winery-made red wine can be mimicked in a home setup because they age their wines longer, use oak casks, and degas very differently. I'm giving this 4 stars, even though I don't feel like it tastes like a true Merlot, because I think this is a great price and I was able to buy through Prime... This allows me to experiment more with the wine so I can try to get the taste I want. I had the same experience with a different brand's kit- but it cost twice (three times maybe) as much. I am sure with some experimentation that I may get better results. That said, I've found fruity wines to be much easier to DIY so they might be a better option for new wine making enthusiasts.

The kit had detailed instructions and the box was smaller than other kits I've seen- even though it made just as much wine. I liked that. I recommend working HARD to properly degas this. I thought we did a good job but it still wasn't quite there. We purchased a wine whip to attach to our drill which did a much better job than the hand stirring I tried on our first red wine kit... Huge difference. I've read since that I should've used the wine whip in two different directions to do an even better job of degassing. The instructions state to degas over a period of 48 hrs. Definitely invest the time and energy here... Otherwise you'll end up with very champagne-like red wine.

This is drinkable. We drink it alone but it should be good for sangria too. I'm hoping to tweak this to get the deep red that I normally love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Merlot Wine Base

This makes the best wine from concentrate that I've tried. I add black currants during the fermentation process and it adds a great flavor profile to the merlot. Has everything you need. Not cheap but worth it if you want to make a good tasting wine or port

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good low cost wine kit!

I have made over 60 wine kits over the last 4 years. This kit performed as well as any of the other kits. I bought the Merlot Fontana Wine kit and added about a cup of oak chips and about 3/4 cup dried elderberries which I do with all my Merlots. At 4 weeks I stabilized and put in the clarifiers. As always, I tasted the wine to establish dryness and flavor at the 4 week mark. From my experience, I believe this will be one of my better Merlots. The oak added the dryness I was looking for, the elderberries gave it a nice fruity flavor and the base Merlot had a nice all around wine flavor. I expect to bottle and age this for no less than 6 months, at which time I believe it will be a very good tasting wine. Thanks to Fontana and Amazon for supplying us with a low cost, good tasting wine kit. Hoping they add more varietals at this price in the near future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Merlot and a great value!

Wow, is all I can say. I have made roughly 80 wine kits in the last five years and this was the biggest surprise. I expected this kit to be an OK kit, suitable for large party after a few bottles had already been opened or a light red for dinner. Bulk stored for a couple of months with heavy oak and light add of sugar in the primary. We opened a bottle last night and I was blown away. Rich, complex, and heavy legs...and bottled roughly sixty days ago. Very young wine but fantastic. Told the wife to keep her hands off and let it age some more. 1st rate kit for the price and an amazing value. The Merlot is a hands down winner!

Update after aging: The merlot and malbec kits are the best of the less expensive Fontana lines. To get a fuller body wine, you need to add raisins or currants, and oak into the primary or the wine will be thin. The chardonnay is ok and decent with oaking in the primary and secondary. The pinot grigio has been a big disappointment after making four kits with various tweaks. The PG is not clear or crisp like a typical pinot grigio even after adding fruit zest. I would suggest trying another brand for the whites.
