5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing machine, best purchase, super beginner friendly

This is my first sewing machine. There are so many stitching options but I’ve just stuck to the first stitch since I’m a beginner. It took me about 15 minutes to understand the set up but the instructions were super clear and there is a lot online. I’ve only used the lowest speed and played around with the others but the lowest one is perfect for a starter and it can get pretty quick for anyone who prefers that. It’s really quiet although I don’t have much to compare it to. Best sewing machine, super simple, easy to learn and it is very smooth. It is plastic but I think it will be sturdy if well maintained. Definitely worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS SEWING MACHINE!
Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2011
I recently purchased this Brother sewing machine and am absolutely amazed at the quality of this machine for the price (PLUS a $15.00 rebate!). I am happy to give this machine a well-deserved 5-star rating!

I have been sewing for over 40 years on many different machines. I have a wonderful Viking machine that I love using. I recently joined a weekly quilting group and was hesitant about toting my Viking back and forth so much and risk damaging it. I decided to buy an inexpensive machine for that purpose. When I did a search in Amazon the Brother CS6000i popped up. I couldn't believe you could get so much for the price, but in reading the reviews I decided hundreds of people couldn't be wrong and I would give it a try. My good friend ordered one the same day for the same purpose as I did. The machine is light and easy to carry, but it sounds and feels heavy-duty when in use. The stitches are perfect and it is so easy to use. As a quilter I love the following features: needle up/needle down function, right-to-left needle adjustment, built-in quilting stitches, and a walking foot and oversized work table attachment that are included! (The walking foot for the Viking alone sells for $60.00+.) As any quilter knows, a 1/4' seam is essential for every pattern. After reading the product description I was surprised to see that a 1/4" foot was not included, so I ordered one with the machine. No need for that tho! This machine has two built-in stitches that sew 1/4" from the right edge or 1/4 from the left edge!!!

But, this is not just a quilter's machine. If you want a machine for clothing construction it also has 7 different buttonhole styles and overcast, stretch and blind hem stitches.

The price would be attractive for a beginning sewer, but this is not just a "starter" machine. I researched many other brands out there and you can't find any other brand that is this nice at twice the price. Take it from a very experienced sewer--this is a really good buy!

I have to mention that there is one thing I don't care for much on this machine--LED lighting. But then, that may just be me because other reviewers aren't complaining and I personally don't like ANY LED lighting. With the phasing out of incandescent lights maybe all machines how have LED (?). I have a desk lamp that I use to light my work surface so this is really not a deal-breaker for me.

I would also like to add that I have purchased hundreds of items on Amazon (my go-to shopping site) over many years, and this is the first review I have written, although I have been pleased with every product purchased through them. This machine is exceptional and I felt it deserves my time to give it the rating it deserves.

One suggestion: For those reviewers who mentioned thread & tension problems I agree that using a good quality thread (long fibers) is going to give you the best result and metal bobbins are certainly worth a try. However, the first thing you should always try with these issues is changing your needle. Needles should not continue to be used until they break because over time they get dull and may develop a slight bend in them. With these precision machines even a needle being off just a tad can cause problems. Many sewing experts recommend changing your needle each time you start a new project. I admit I don't do that religiously, but it is usually the first trouble-shooting solution I try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother!

Recently, my loyal White 3270 machine gave up the ghost. Of course, this occurred when I had several orders for skirts, and I was in need of a machine that was economical yet had several different stitch styles.

After some browsing through Amazon, I came upon the Brother 6000i. The consumer reviews sang the machine's praises, and $149.00 later, my machine was on it's way.

Let me make this clear before I start my review: I am, at best, a novice seamstress. I am steadily improving my skills, so this review is going to be from the perspective of someone who uses maybe 1/4th of the features that this machine is capable of performing. For the advanced features, I will simply refer to the instruction manual (which comes in both English and Spanish versions, by the way).

Physical Appearance and Weight

This machine is snazzy-looking and weighs considerably less than my dearly-departed White. The corners are rounded, and the dark blue and white coloration is pleasant. The 60 different stitches that the machine is capable of are printed on the face of the machine in dark blue ink, and easily readable. In terms of durability, the light weight does make me dubious; however, I do not plan to drop kick the machine to test whether or not it would survive.

Included in the Package

This is my first "electronic" sewing machine. That is, the machine is programmable. There is a digital display; you use the various buttons on the machine to program the desired stitch and functions. Maybe I am just easily impressed, but I find the ease with which I can select the stitch I want to do very convenient, especially as compared with my last machine.

The machine includes a nice assortment of presser feet, including a quilting walking foot that can be used on slippery fabrics. There are 7 different button hole settings, zipper insertion, darning, and twin needle stitching support (!!).

The package itself includes:
-an oversized accessory table that attaches to the machine to support larger items, especially quilts.
-several different presser feet, including some of the higher-end (read: super complicated sewing techniques I don't know) ones.
-oil, a brush, and a spare bobbin.
-spare needles.
-an electronic pedal.
-a power cord.
-a hard cover to store the machine when not in use.

Ease of Use

I will make this simple: the machine is cinch to use, and with electronic speed control, a dream come true for my novice abilities. Without reading the manual, I was able to figure out how to thread the machine, how to thread the bobbin, how to choose the stitch that I wanted, and how to make it go.

One of the neat things about this machine is that it can be operated with either the foot pedal (plug it in) or a button on the front of the machine (do not plug in the pedal). While I prefer to use the pedal, if you have issues with being able to depress the pedal, or maybe just no room to use it, you are able to still sew!

Winding a bobbin is easily accomplished through the automatic bobbin-winding feature. The box states that the machine has a "drop-in bobbin", which is mostly true; you still need to slide the thread through a few loops to get it started. In terms of picking up the thread, I had no issues. As a matter of fact, I was able to begin sewing with no problems whatsoever; the machine performed exactly as desired.

In terms of the non-tangible features, there is a 25-year warranty! Given how happy that I am so far with this machine, hopefully I will never have a need to invoke said warranty. Knowing that it is there is definitely a plus.

Finally, the instruction manual. There are a lot of pictures to explain how to use the machine. As I said before, I do not use many of the features available (at least, yet), but if I needed to, the manual is very thorough. There are actually two separate manuals, one in English and one in Spanish. There is a small piece of paper included, also, which states "Uses common replacement accessories: Bobbin: Class 15 plastic bobbin; Needle: standard sewing machine needles". While all of this information is available in the manual, including a quick reference piece of paper is convenient; I can simply stick the paper in my bag so that I do not have to worry about flipping through the book to find out this information.

Overall

For the price, this machine is EXCELLENT! Let me say it again: if you are looking for an economical, light-weight, comes-with-many-spiffy-features machine, this one is for you. Amazon is currently selling this product for $149.00 with free Super Saver shipping (free two-day shipping if you have Amazon Prime). I recommend this machine for both the beginner or the pro seamstress/seamster (?? not sure the male prefix!). With all of the features and items included, you are sure to produce lovely items.
