About this item

An instant #1 New York Times bestseller!
The global phenomenon by Callie Hart--a highly addicting enemies-to-lovers Romantasy with razor-sharp banter, heart-stopping action, and blistering hot romance--now has an embossed cover, silver foiling, and an updated interior design.

Do not touch the sword. Do not turn the key. Do not open the gate.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses, or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen’s reservoirs for as long as she can remember. In the land of the unforgiving desert, there isn’t much a girl wouldn’t do for a glass of water. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone.

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares…but it turns out they’re real, and Saeris has landed right in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

The first of her kind to tread the frozen mountains of Yvelia in over a thousand years, Saeris mistakenly binds herself to Kingfisher, a handsome Fae warrior, who has secrets and nefarious agendas of his own. He will use her Alchemist’s magic to protect his people, no matter what it costs him… or her. Death has a name. It is Kingfisher of the Ajun Gate. His past is murky. His attitude stinks. And he’s the only way Saeris is going to make it home.

Be careful of the deals you make, dear child. The devil is in the details...

This book has to be by far the best fantasy book I have read this year. It's definitely worth the hype and more.

Hart has a way of telling the story in a way that grabs you from the get go. Usually fantasy books can be really good at building the world or it can be a drag. In this book none of that happens, the arcs develop in a natural way that feels organic and enthralls you.

The characters are all interesting and consistent and their development is also really grabbing. There were little discrepancies here and there but very minor, you would only notice if you really pay attention but nothing that would interfere with what's happening.

Another thing I really loved is that this has to be the first Fae book that mentions the existence of all types of Fae (High and other) within the same world. Also, points to the author for the way she introduced it all. Saeris experience of the stars for the first time and the way they were explained to her, beautiful.

As an overall this book has it all: enemy to lovers, fantasy, spice, fun banter, action, plot twists and lots of cliffhangers.

I hope the second one comes out soon. I need to know what happens.

An absolute masterpiece in the dark romance genre. From the first chapter, I was completely hooked by the gripping storyline and the intense chemistry between the characters. The blend of suspense, passion, and raw emotion kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

The narration is flawless, bringing the characters to life with such vivid emotion that I felt like I was living the story alongside them. The tension, twists, and dark undertones are perfectly balanced with moments of vulnerability and connection, making it impossible to stop listening.

Callie Hart’s writing is both poetic and powerful, with a storyline that’s fresh, daring, and unforgettable. If you’re looking for a story that will captivate you from start to finish, this audiobook is a must! Highly recommend!

So glad to snag a copy of this! I don’t know why I waited to read this for so long! This is a great example of what romantasy is. I loved both the fmc and mmc in this. Kingfisher is how mmc’s should be written and Saeris was vulnerable and yet tough as nails. She holds her own and stands her ground. Their banter was well done! The secondary characters were also very enjoyable and memorable. I loved watching the interactions between everyone on the page. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, but doesn’t take away from the story being satisfying. I read an original self published version and the typos were a bit distracting but I also listened to the audiobook and it was so good! If you have access to audiobooks, I’d highly recommend it. I will be adding the next in the series to my auto buy list as soon as I can. Book arrived in good condition. No issues that I can see given this cover is so hard to find now.

This is hands down one of my TOP FIVE reads of 2024. The way Callie wrote this book was so creative and I could not put it down. Not only was this fantasy so unique to others I’ve read - the characters were EVERYTHING. Saeris is fiesty, witty and everything I could have hoped for in a FMC and then you add the moody kingfisher into the mix and I was kicking my feet giggling every time he was on the page. This book was just so so good and marked every fantasy check mark in my book. I CANNOT wait for book two.

Okay, okay... this book was actually worth the hype.
I'll even go as far to say this was my best read this year.
I'm a picky reader and it bothers me that I am. I took a break from the Plated Prisoner series (beautiful read but tediously drawn out and it drives me insane) and jumped into this one.
I was absolutely enthralled by chapter one and did not put it down until I was finished. Two days of having to hear my husband complain about me reading while I cooked or waking him up at 2am because I laughed a little too hard or yelped out an elongated nooooooo.
Seriously. I can't say enough good things about this book. Spectacular writing.. the world building, the characters, the plot, the romance, the way it just effortlessly flowed.. chefs kiss.
For now, this book sits on my top shelf looking down on all my other dark fantasy romance books and laughs at them.

This was awesome. It started out a tad bit slow but then picked up into a super fast, action packed story! Even the side characters were having me wanting to read more and stay longer in the world with them.

I loved the vampire/fae/creature themes, along with hidden identity, unknown powers and just a dash of political intrigue, topped off with a bit of plot twist.

The characters are flawed. Beautifully so, I might add. Our MFC is strong, smart, witty, and the MMC is broody, powerful and devoted.

The writing was well done, and the world building, while not hugely described, was also well done too. This is definitely a book I'd read again.
