About this item

The bestselling author of A Killer’s Wife delivers a haunting legal thriller, plunging the reader headlong into the search for a deadly stalker—and a quest to bring a young victim peace.

Far from the neon glare of the Vegas Strip, attorney Piper Danes walks away from a hotshot law firm to work as a guardian ad litem (GAL). Piper was once a vulnerable youth herself, and a GAL gave her hope when she needed it most. Now she’s committed to paying it forward.

Her latest case is unlike any other: fifteen-year-old Sophie Grace is the sole survivor of a gruesome family murder. Teaming up with the formidable Judge Hope Dawson and enigmatic Detective Lazarus Holloway, Piper delves into a world more sinister than she could have imagined.

Their hunt for the truth leads to a serial killer known only as “the Creeper,” a predator who hides in the shadows. But as the team inches closer to unveiling the murderer, they find themselves in the crosshairs. Trapped in a web of lies, Piper will do anything to protect Sophie and stop the killer…before she becomes his next victim.

I've never read a book before with a guardian ad litem. When a family-killer leaves a fifteen-year-old girl orphaned, a lawyer advocates for her. The case is part of a special project related to the theory (I ascribe it to Jean Genet) that if you label a child a criminal they will become one. It's hard to see how that applies when the child is a victim, not the perpetrator, but everything else worked. The characters were believable, not caricatures. The perpetrator and crime were interesting. The pace was excellent. It is set in Las Vegas but the setting doesn't come into the story much.

With “The Silent Watcher” author Victor Methos has given us an absorbing murder mystery that fully lives up to its promotional materials. The characters are well-drawn and compelling. The Las Vegas setting focuses much more on the grittier aspects of the city than on its tourist-magnet glitz and glamour. The opening chapter is “heart-pounding.” The plot, which centers on the search for and trial of the killer, is well-paced and contains surprises. The prose and dialogue are simple, natural, and believable, making the novel a pleasure, and easy, to read. Mr. Methos’s research into the topics he chooses to write about (e.g., guardians ad litem, parental neglect/abuse, psychiatry/mental health, cannibalism, criminal law and procedure, etc.) is very good and adds much to the story’s credibility. Fans of John Grisham, Scott Turow, and also Michael Connelly should find much to enjoy here.

I have read all of Vic's books and all of them have strong characters, an interesting story, and the good guys doing whatever it takes to catch the bad guys. This Vegas Shadows Series is going to be really good and I can't wait for #2. This one had some really interesting courtroom theatrics as well. Loved it. Thanks Vic

Surprisingly this was an excellent story and well told. It was well worth my time and effort to read it. Its hard to say I actually enjoyed it. Something this dark and graffic should not be enjoyed to my way of thinking.
Yet , look forward to the next installment.
If blood ,guts and gore are your preferred entertainment than this is a very good way to pass time.
If you like something more tame than I would recommend a more less violent book.
Good work, bordering on excellent. .

I've liked all the Victor Methos books I've read so far and this one is no exception. I like his characters in that there are a variety of personalities with differing levels of morality. The plot was good although somewhat predictable. Some exciting chases and descriptive scenes made it hard to put down at times. A few minor typos here and there that probably go unnoticed by most but which surprised me a little bit. There are some scenes of violence that are graphically descriptive, as with his other books I've read also. This was not my favorite book of his, but it was really good and I will be reading the others in this series.

Searching for and catching murderers must be a job like no other. This book reveals how it might happen but of course, it’s fiction, I hope it is stranger than truth.

I think this is going to be a great series and am looking forward to the next book. The main characters are interesting. The storyline isn’t trite, and it will make you question what is causing those bumps in the night. The author serves up some unexpected twists. Enjoyable read.

This is my first read by Victor Methos. I enjoyed it and will read more. The characters were interesting and well developed. The storyline held my interest and the story moved along at a good pace. There was a little too much written in the cross examinations but nothing I couldn’t deal with. I did get a bit impatient in that area though. I’m always happy to find a new author.
