About this item

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive.

Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow.

Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person’s aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return. Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city.

Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things.

From the author of Dreams of Ice and Iron comes a new fantasy romance perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Ilona Andrews, and Cassandra Clare.

    Dying. Dead. Deceased.

Bury me with this book ????

Okay, so I had seen this book compared to Crescent City A LOT.
And I can see the similar vibes. We have an urban fantasy setting filled with supernatural beings and all the things that go bump in the night. Where the magic-less humans are nothing more than a placeholder at the bottom of the food chain.

ANDDD for me, that is where the similarities end. Dare I say- as a whole, I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed Crescent City.

ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ɢᴏᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs stood out on its own with its authenticity, beautiful character dynamics, and unique magic systems.

THIS BOOK WAS CAPTIVATING. The world building and tension was done so well, that this did NOT feel like it was 760 pages long.
There were twists and turns around every corner to keep you completely immersed in this world.
Not a single time was I correct in my theories (and I’m usually pretty good at that!)

The world building was done in such a way that even though there was an immense- and I mean a crazy amount of gears turning, I never once felt lost. Which is something to say in itself about the start of a new series that had SO much going on.

ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ɢᴏᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs was definitely a slow burn. But I don’t want to send anyone running the other way by saying that. Because this was dual-pov between our two main leads and let me tell you THE TENSION WAS THERE. All the glorious tension you could ask for.

That’s all I’m going to say. I went into this one relatively blind, aside from the comparison to CC and I think you should too ????
All-in-all. This was a fantastic beginning to a new series, that I feel will definitely wind up being one of my favorites!

P.S. Don’t forget to bury me with this book.

    Darien Cassel…

This book was such an incredible urban fantasy mystery. The intrigue behind who’s trying to hunt down Loren and who’s abducting the other human girls makes this plot very compelling.

Darien Cassel, who was paid to track down and kill Loren, ends up offering her his protection services and they find themselves in the middle of a huge scheme.

I love the diversity among the different groups and the characters we meet. It gives Crescent City vibes but with a different twist. I was hooked from the start and could easily imagine myself immersed in the setting. It lagged a little in the middle for me but damn, the ending really spun you around. There were even parts of the book like played out like a movie in my mind.

The banter was delicious, the slowwwww burn so worth it, and the emotional pulls along the way really gripped your heart. I was tearing up at certain scenes and blowing up someone’s DMs.

Loren’s character was easily relatable for me, and the perfect pair for our MMC. And Darien, you think you’ve got him pegged as the bad boy grump, but he’s the sweetest male that’ll make you melt.

3.0 out of 5 stars solidly cute slow burn…with a lot murder
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024
    3.5

This is a sloooow burn. I was kicking my feet at the first kiss and I love slow burns. This is heavy on world building which I also love. I read a lot of reviews that it was a slow start but I didn’t think so. It was what a Crescent City could have been (I did not like CC, I know I know I can hear your gasp from here but I said what I said).

Nitpicky criticism that has me at 3 stars instead of four, it needed just slightly better editing. Lots of repeating phrases that did eventually annoy me enough to take me a little out of the story. A few plot hiccups that didn’t make total sense but not bad enough to make me hate it or take away from all the things I did like about it. I liked the characters and they were decently solid development and likable even though Darien was a murdurous bounty hunter.

The ending wrapped up a little too quickly (and I by the time ain’t I mean like the last 15 pages end) that was meant to set the next book but didn’t and was a weak plot point but again not enough to make me dislike it.

It was a really friggin cute wholesome dark romance which I know doesn’t totally make sense and make me chuckle a lot but I got sucked into it and stayed up way to late to read it.
