About this item

A woman delves into a centuries-old murder to find the truth behind her self-destructive behavior in a powerful novel about love, loss, and healing by the bestselling author of An Unfinished Story and The Stars Don’t Lie.

Unable to catch a break in life or love as she approaches thirty, Charli Thurman sees red lights at every crossroads. And given the Thurman family’s tumultuous history, she knows things will only get worse, unless she can break the cycle and figure out where—and when—it all went wrong.

Charli is skeptical when her best friend introduces her to a “soul reader” who specializes in generational trauma. But during family constellation therapy with the guru, Charli experiences an inexplicable memory of terrible violence. Whatever happened in the past, it created an imbalance that’s still in the Thurman blood.

When Charli’s research leads her to Winchester, England, she meets a charming pub owner named Noah, whose own family history is similarly twisted. As the mystery deepens around a damaged inheritance and a tragic death, Charli is resolved to find the truth—and create the fresh start she has been hoping for her whole life.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!

This book was like time travel, and I do enjoy the time travel genre, but without anyone actually going backwards or forwards in time. The characters were well developed and so watching the protagonist work through her issues and evolve as the story was concluding felt really good. I enjoyed this book immensely.

What would the echoes of your past, of the generations before you say? The creative premise this book is built on, the strong protagonist, and the complexity of each character make this book a must read! I have been a Boo Walker fan from the beginning and this is truly his best work to date.

The dual timeline is masterfully written and captures the imagination. Chapter after chapter the reader is drawn not only into two timelines, but also into differences in class and social standing.

This is a great, great read! I did think the first chapter or two were a bit slow paced and hard to get into, however, stick with it and you'll see they are the perfect set-up for the rest of this incredible book!

I love Boo Walker’s books. Read ‘em all and NEVER leave reviews. No spoilers here but the intertwined modern and historical storylines will have you turning pages ALL NIGHT LONG!
And the woo woo OMG. I’m pretty sure my husband and I are entangled in our own family constellation imbalance. It’s part of the synchronicities that just slap you in the face sometimes…
Please please read if you are drawn to this book in any way. Potentially life changing and sparking research in the theories behind this fantastic love story. xx

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting plot, cheesy ending

I liked the parallel story lines, but right as the book begins to climax - the writing gets to be cliche, over dramatic, and predictable.

The book as a whole was good but it’s not one I would revisit again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating plot, multi-layered protagonist, multiple-timelines, and fast-paced

I really like this author’s books and this one is no exception. The concept that our recent ancestor’s experiences, especially if traumatic, can impact our own lives via DNA modification has clearly been proven. We can see that in our family of Holocaust survivor children and grandchildren. The added concept of “morphic” influence is new to me and fascinating, even if it’s hard to believe. Never-the-less, this is key to the plot and is very well conceived and executed in the multi-timeline structure of the book. The protagonist, a 29-year old woman, is challenging to like initially as being a cynic and self-defeatist, but her self-awareness of her social and relationship issues and ultimate desire to self-correct had me rooting for her big time. I also really like the genealogical puzzle-solving aspect of the book. Great, fast read and highly recommended!

Boo Walker, I have read every book you have written starting with the Red Mountain series as I live in Eastern Washington. I have never been disappointed. An Echo in Time was a wonderful trip. Having been adopted, finding family is close to my heart. Thank you for another great adventure and characters.

Walker has suggested what I, as a therapist, know to be true about the epigenetics of trauma. He has artfully crafted the healing path through the family legacy of woundedness to awareness and truth. The read was entertaining and relevant.
