Easy CD Creator 4 is supposed to work with Windows 95/98, 2000, and NT. I had all sorts of problems trying to get it to just recognize a 48X Sony CD-RW drive, even with the Adaptec/Roxio updates installed. I had to finally do a minimal install and edit the device list in the registry to get it to see the drive.
However then there were still problems. Easy CD's drive read/write test would hang the system just before completing on a known good drive (tested with Sony's drive test program). The program also would not burn files to Maxell disks, but would burn to Kodak disks. However, burning sometimes failed just before completion, hanging the system, and giving an "illegal operation" message.
There are also other annoying things such as a stupid cartoon CD character that bobs around when you run the burning wizard. Also, the program loads at start-up, which takes system resources and is completely unnecessary.
I loaded Nero Express 6 (the stripped down version of Nero 6) and had no problems burning data files to CD-R disks. If you are running pre-XP Windows I would recommend Nero 6 instead.
As of 2011 you can still order an update CD for Nero 6 ($13) from the downloads section at Nero dot com. This should allow the program to recognize newer CD-RW drives (but some it may not). As with Easy CD, there may be a way around this by editing the program's device list in the registry to add the drive model number. There may be info on this somewhere on the Net.
