This was well written, so I gave it four stars. I removed one star because I was hoping for something new or a deeper look at the old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use zero-risk bias to your benefit!

The title of this book grabbed my attention. My first question: how does the author define "effective?" Arias's bio states she has studied psychology with a passion for human behavior and the power of communication.

It becomes clear that effectiveness is equated with the ability to influence, although Arias provides a more detailed definition. This makes sense to me. The author suggests this effective communication transforms into making deeper connections with people. Again, that makes sense.

The author discusses obstacles that may interfere with effective communication. For example, body language.

Do you know what is meant by "availability heuristic?" I do now and found this discussion most informative. Do certain memorable events disproportionately outweigh decision-making? Why is this important when talking to people?

The importance of storytelling is discussed. It is argued that how you tell a story tells your audience a lot about you. Good storytelling results in your message being heard. Use pathos to your advantage. Ms. Arias describes what this means and why it is important. The concepts of cognitive bias and zero-risk bias are discussed.

Overall, the reader learns several concepts that can help or hinder effective communication. I enjoyed this book and recommend it,

3.0 out of 5 stars Many books with same title…

I read this in error, thinking it was another book by the same title. Speaking of biases, there are some biases embedded in the content of this book. I feel it’s focused more on public speaking than speaking in general to people on an individual basis.

5.0 out of 5 stars number one?

This title was a number one bestseller when I came across it, and the reviews, though the book is relatively new and there aren't yet many, seem pretty positive. The writing style is a bit stunted, but the book itself is well-written, I knew most of the material but it was organized well enough that I was able to navigate and find new information without wading through a rehash of every psych course or business book I've read. The thing that impresses me most is how much the book focuses on biases, on understanding them in ourselves and others.
For some reason, Amazon's sensitivity filter has chosen to hide this review. I'm not sure why, I don't see anything sensitive in here. Amazon, please reconsider.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great subject but needs revising

I had high hopes for this book because it is on one of my favorite subjects, effective communication. The chapter headings all sounded good, although I hadn't heard of a few of the concepts and was interested in learning more about them. Unfortunately, I found the writing to be contradictory to the book itself as it didn't communicate well to me at all. The book is in need of some formatting and editing to help achieve its goal of communicating what the author is trying to teach.

4.0 out of 5 stars good information in general
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2023
I generally enjoyed the book and its approach. Nothing really new, from using body language to breathing techniques, etc. I am still a little confused that a big chunk of the book was dedicated to psychological biases. Definitely important to understand your own shortcomings and what influences you (or others), but I don't fully understand why this became the major topic of the book. I imagine that the author's background in psychology means she is more comfortable talking about those things than some of the other aspects of effective communication. That is why it took so much space in the book maybe.
