I've seen ads for these things for years and thought they had to be the biggest white elephant known to man - some vaguely more sophisticated cousin of the Chia Pet. Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong!

This thing is great. It does everything it says and more, is easy to use, and will give me fresh greens all winter.
I'm looking forward to having bright fresh greens while blizzards rage outside - and this gives more than enough for one person - I have trouble keeping up with a few things. It's given me more beautiful dill than I can use, by a mile (the photo is less than half the dill that I finally had to hack back because it was crowding other things).

Best part is that this is almost zero work. Top off the water every now and then (up to every day or two as the plants get bigger) and add two capfuls of plant food every two weeks when the light goes on. Could. Not. Be. Easier.

I learned a few things from my first round, so here are some helps and hints:

    - I started with only four items, planning on planting the other two after 2-3 weeks so my harvests would be staggered. Mistake. This stuff grows so fast that the greenery from my first round blocked the light from getting to the later plantings. I spent a few weeks trying to pull back the higher stuff to create a path for the light to the newer stuff but finally gave up. Learned for next time, though.

    - Ditto with not putting things that take a few weeks to sprout (the plant cone has est sprout time written on the top) next to things that sprout in days or the later items may struggle to get light. Next time I'll arrange plants so that things with similar sprout times are somewhat together.

    - This one's no joke. Plant things that you will use a lot. Things like basil, parsley and chives can go on almost everything, but uses for something like dill are more limited. Next round I will favor things that are versatile and have wide use, because this grows A LOT of everything.

    - And final comment on balance, next time I will plant maybe four salad greens and two herbs. You use the greens in more volume, so they will balance out with the herbs if you plant more. So 4-2 or maybe 3-3

    - The light is really, really bright. Pick a place where it's easy to walk to from the kitchen with a bowl and scissors, but not in your face where it could get irritating. If you cycle it on during the day, it won't be so intrusive. This thing throws zero heat, so you can block the light easily if needed with stacked items or even a paper bag over top.

    - The bigger your plants get, the more they suck up the water. At first I only had to top off the water once a week or so. Now I'm adding about a pop bottle of water every few days. I worry about what happens when travel resumes because I can see it running out quickly when I'm not here. There is a model of AeroGarden with a vacation mode that adjust lights so the plants grow less and need less water while you're away, and if I get a second AG, it will have the vacation mode.

That's it! This thing really works and is a lot of fun. For a single-person household, it almost works too good because there's a lot of greens to eat! I will solve that by using better balance and targeted selection of plants for the next round.

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Harvest 2.0 to add to my Harvest 1.0
Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2024
I’ll preface by saying I’m a senior and a gadget guy. A year ago, I bought the Aerogarden Harvest (another gadget) on sale, but didn’t set it up for another 10 months. Why? Well, I sometimes buy things on sale, but really want them as a gift down the road for someone. Then, as a senior, I forgot about it until after Christmas. A few months later, I realized that the Aerogarden has a 12-month warranty, so I figured that I better get started with it. Unfortunately, the included pre-seeded herb pods looks like they were all opened, so I had no idea what I was really planting until they started to sprout and I did a lot of juggling their name stickers. The unit was brand new in its original packaging, but the seed pods were definitely tampered with. I’ll call this Harvest model the 1.0 to avoid confusion. Four of the six pods sprouted and I was happy with that. I could have contacted Aerogarden to get replacements, but I planned to get another Aerogarden, and I’d have more than enough things to plant, especially after I bought a lettuce greens pre-seeded pod kit.

My wife saw what a fun time I was having with the Harvest 1.0, that she figured that she’d surprise me a 2.0 for Father’s Day. I had read about and watched review videos about the Harvest 2.0 being a dog of a system. I writing here to explain that in my limited experience, that’s not the case. One review mentioned the inconsistent grow light timing to the point that I thought it was going to be on a random schedule. That’s not what I experienced. There are instructions on how to set the 2.0 grow light and the two Harvests I own have the same exact 15-hour schedule down to the minute, but are set up differently from each other. My only fear about opening this present and making the return more difficult was that this person was correct and my light schedule would be based on random times. Nope, it works fine. I believe that this person may missed this point in the directions or received a defective unit. The same reviewer mentioned that his 2.0 unit did not come with clear grow covers for holding humidity and didn’t know if that was an error or if the unit wasn’t supposed to have the grow covers. The 2.0 doesn’t have the grow covers included.

Several reviewers have also pointed out that the 2.0 only puts out 15w of light compared to the 20w of the 1.0. I’m not experienced enough with hydroponic gardens to know if this will be a significant Achilles heel going forward. It’s plenty bright and if I didn’t already own the 1.0, I wouldn’t even notice.

The Harvest 2.0 doesn’t come with pre-seeded pods. It comes with six grow your own pods and a pack of Black Seeded Simpson lettuce. This setup has given me the experience setting up my own pods that I only used one pod for the included lettuce seeds, and used the other five to start growing my own select herbs and tomatoes. I plan to never purchase pre-seeded pods ago as this was so easy.

A new user will probably want to simultaneously order either pre-seeded pods with herbs and/or vegetables to gain experience with growing something other than the included lettuce.

I also noticed that the water pump is smaller than the 1.0 pump and has a correspondingly smaller sponge filter. I didn't notice the filter until the first cleaning because it's on the bottom of the removable pump rather than on the pump's side like the 1.0.

I have no reservations about recommending the Harvest 2.0 as an introduction to hydroponics or to add to an experienced user’s collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Item arrived okay, EXCEPT the fertilizer bottle was OPEN, empty, and had spilled all over.

Have bought two other AeroGarden Harvest units from Amazon, one was "used-like-new." They both work great, I really love them plus the ease and fun of growing various things in them. This particular item, also "used-like-new" , however, arrived SOAKING WET. The fertilizer bottle's lid was completely off, it was empty, and its contents were all over the packing and other items. There is no "replace" option for the fertilizer bottle, only a complete return. Disappointing, but I'll keep the item. Would have been nice for an Amazon-contact option. So, just buyer beware!
