4.0 out of 5 stars Much More Stable Than Before
Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2003
I noticed some earlier reviews about Poser 5 being unstable. I don't know if the current version (Service Pack 3) is any more stable on the systems of those reviewers, but it's been running very well on mine, a PC clone I built myself. That said, it does run very slow if it's loaded down with detailed dynamic hair and the render quality is turned up high, but that's something I don't think is always needed to produce a quality animation. I usually save it for still images.
I'm not sure how the latest upgrade has improved on most machines, but it looks like Curious Labs is trying to improve the reliablity of Poser 5. Now if someone can get it to import to Vue d'Esprit 4 I'll be totally happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful tool
Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2006
I am a hobby illustrator who runs the gamut over many types of art, traditional and digital. Originally, I got Poser 3 free in a magazine.

I bought a discount copy of Poser 5 from here, and had no problems. Within a half hour I'd installed the software and downloaded a bunch of free props from Daz3d, renderotica, etc.

Now, for all purpose 3D, you need a more versatile tool. Like Caligari TrueSpace, one I'll vouch for. Or Maya, Lightwave, if you have a few thousand to trash or know a Pir8.

Generally, I like to draw by hand, then color with Painter or make a Vector image. For 3D, I use lots of time with TrueSpace setting up detailed mini-worlds. Right now, I'm building a figure from scratch for one of those projects.

So, why do I get Poser? For 'figure base' experiments. Good fast tool for getting all the poses/perspective right. I'm going to do an 80 panel project soon, and I'll use it for the figures, but draw over them with my Wacom.

I'll highly reccomend Poser 5+ for artists, specificly Illustrators. BTW-That was its original design, Poser1 was advertized in comics fan magazines to aspiring artists, a "Wooden manequin" that you could position any way you want. This is a good 'base' to help with perspective and get a start.

Other uses are for animators. Ever hear of the "Rotoscope"? With this software, and another good graphics utility, (Toon Boom, Flash) you could make another "Fire and Ice". Just have a good character design / storyboard, then have the poser characters act out the scenes. Then split the AVI and trace over the frames.

    [...]Check out Renderotica.

1.0 out of 5 stars poser 5 very poor peformance

Poser 5 comes with an activation system (like Win XP) that prevents you from using it on more than one PC. Even with this security, they REFUSE to let you run more than one instance of the product on the same PC. It still checks the network to see if you're running an illegal copy of poser 5. So much for the activation feature.
The new render system is 250% slower than Poser 4 render engine. So if you want to render a movie or large file, you'll have to wait a long long time (hours or days) before you can do anything else. So if you have to render 10 pictures or movies, you have to wait until each is fully rendered slowly one by one before you go on to the next. I am simply not kidding! I have a few choice words to say but I don't think I can stoop to that level.
There's no network rendering support. If you own Poser 4, Curious labs will NOT permit you to run it as a back up, so plainly in this age of mulitasking... you can FORGET IT. No cheating is allowed. You can only work on one thing at a time. So poser 5 is the most expensive and time consuming product todate: Time is Money.
Buying poser 5 is like buying a slow PC and these days, nobody buys a slow pc. Poser 4 pro is as best as it can get. While poser 5 may be crisper, expect to suffer major.
P5 does offer a ton of new features/items but from the pro pak. The hair room is fantastic; if only I could get the hair to grow ~ nothing as yet.
On looks, on a scale of 1-5 (1 being best), I give it a 1.
On performance/value, on a scale of 1-5 (1 being best), I give it a 7 (yes seven). I would stick with Poser 4 pro. Poser 5 just isn't productive. If you don't believe me, ask anyone who bought it... better yet, ask Curious Labs!

3.0 out of 5 stars Forget MAYA, 3D MAX, Lightwave, everything's right here

    This program is the best!
I had wanted to get into 3D artwork as a hobby some time ago, I even went through the trouble of purchasing MAYA 3D and Lightwave 7 3D softwares (Got them on a student Bargain) Anyways learning the simplest basics such as modeling for both of these programs is EXTREMELY difficult!!! I purchased the book that's all over the net "Dan Ablan's Lightwave 7 book" the book has like a billion intimidating pages to read and he ASSUMES you already know the basics of 3D modeling. MAYA is even harder.
The books are still here gathering dust...you can now plant corn with the dust that has gathered.
I heard about POSER for modeling people, I figure that's one of the reasons I want to learn 3D so I can model people and eventually get into doing CGI effects for movies, etc.
POSER has all the stuff I need to make a quick model of a human being, a face that I can adjust to my liking in terms of ethnic features, Asian, black, white. Size, skinny, medium build, Hero build, and really BIG!
It also enables you to animate your models, import pictures, export the models to Bryce, and 3D max, as well as other 3D programs.
And the best thing that this software does for me is help me understand the terms used in industry/major 3D modeling programs; for instance, it has helped me understand what "deformers" are, parent, morph, and so much more, it's actually a BETTER learning program for beginners because it's so simple to understand and the interface is so easy to follow, practically what you see is what you get...it kind of reminds me of how DREAMWEAVER has turned alot of average no background hobbyists into professional web developers..POSER can help you get to that next level in 3D or better prepare you for advanced 3D software. It is what Photoshop LE (Limited Edition) did for first time Photoshop users. POSER is highly recommended.
