About this item

Slumdog Millionaire meets Forrest Gump

In 2018, under a full moon in the remote Mantiqueira mountain range in Brazil, a sickly stray dog chose to follow a runner during the Brazil 135 ultramarathon. He stayed by his side for 150 miles.

Fast forward to 2021, when Lucky the stray, now living the life in Florida, set off with his ultrarunner soulmate, David Green, on the journey of their lives — a four-month run covering 3,400 miles from Jacksonville Beach, Florida, to Muir Beach, California. Their route took them through a nation ravaged by Covid-19 and still reeling from the most toxic presidential election in history. An RV became their nightly retreat-on-wheels, captained by Chris, an affable chef from Brooklyn, who would provide so much more than food.

This is David’s honest account, his love letter to Lucky, after three short years together, during which time they inspired each other to break barriers of what is thought possible for dogs and humans -- physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all! I could not put it down!

I started this book Wednesday afternoon and finished it Thursday noon, as I could not put it down! David Green told his story magnificently with such compassion and love. And what a story!! I laughed, especially reading the Breaking Bad event in Nebraska, and I certainly did my share of crying. Chef Chris did an amazing job of nurturing David during their journey, plus his poems were a complete bonus to the book. After finishing the book, I hugged my dog, Toots, for a long, long time as David captured the love between a dog and it's owner perfectly.

Kudos to all three, Lucky, Dave and Chris! Kudos to Grammy Clea also. She was one heck of a force for David.

Listened to the audiobook. Wow!! Fabulously done. While I am well connected with Lucky’s story and read the blog daily, the book brought so much more depth and perspective. The book made me smile, laugh and cry on multiple occasions. Finished it with a heart full of wonderment and gratitude to have known Lucky! Also bought some hard copies to pass on to folks that I know will love the story. Thanks for sharing it to all! (photos 7/4/2018 - a few of my fav of Lucky at his home in Jax Beach - the ear! ❤️)

5.0 out of 5 stars Lucky is love

Just finished this book and am wiping away a few tears.
Despite much weariness of controlling, obsessive, selfish, alpha
males, I found David Green pretty compelling. Of course, the star
of the story is the dog! But he is the one responsible for sharing Lucky,
and Lucky's story, so hats off to him (and his co-writer, Judy D'Mello).

I can't relate to what he does...the masochistic running. I'll never understand
it. I had a friend many years ago who got into it. For him, it gave him a sense
of identity and brought him attention (he stopped after a few years, so...). This
guy clearly has more complex reasons and motivations. He also seems to
have a really good heart, an old-fashioned brand of goodness, and a lack of
(or at least control of) the rampant cynicism around, and in, all of us.

What an incredible story that takes you on so many rollercoasters of life and pushing through the worst parts. How a dog can truly be a man’s best friend and strangers can change your life. 10/10 read!!!

It really touches your heart to read about the deep relationship between David and Lucky. I don’t know who was the lucky one. David that found Lucky or Lucky who found David. A
A beautiful story about the intense love between a man and his dog and the efforts to save the life of his best friend.
