    This Birdfy bamboo mini feeder is described an “ideal gift.” Usually, vendors try to overstate the so-called value of a product by claiming it would be the best gift on the planet. Oddly enough, I do have to agree with them for once. We have two ardent birders in the family. One already has a feeder, one that takes videos only. The other has the usual inexpensive sort.

    The one relative is thrilled with his videos, but this particular feeder takes it to a whole ‘nother level. This feeder has an AI bird identification feature. Can you identify 6,000 birds? I sure can’t and don’t know anyone who’s capable of that feat. He has taken several courses on birds, but probably can’t either. Now, there’s a subscription service with this bird feeder. One is a lifetime for an additional $40, which I opted for. Seems like a more reasonable option in the long run.

    There are excellent instructions included with this Birdfy feeder. There are plenty of line drawing visuals, but also additional resources. For example, there’s an In-App chat, a support email, and (best yet) telephone assistance. The only thing I noticed that would be a must do is putting a seal on the feeder prior to installation.

    My suggestion would be to add Thompson’s Water Seal to your package. This is a quart container, but there’s also a spray. I personally would recommend the kind that’s brushed on, but that’s an opinion only. The blue is a clickable link. Now, you can use the rest of the sealer on something else in your home. It’s fade- and UV-resistant, something that will help the Birdfy feeder last. Is the whole package pricey? Yes, but for a birder or photographer, it’s so worth it.

    I got this to replace another Bird Feeder Camera. The other one was well-made from plastic, but its VicoHome camera stopped working. My wife liked the style of this feeder, since it is made of bamboo. We opted for the version which has prepaid AI Bird Recognition.

    Generally, this feeder is attractive and carefully made. Unfortunately, bamboo still has limitations which cause the fit and finish to appear a bit sloppy. For example, the bird perch at the front of the feeder had to be forced into place and didn’t line up well with the rest of the frame. The design has other trade-offs compared to the plastic feeder, such as a smaller place where the bird can stand while eating. The advantage is that it would be much more difficult for the bird to poop in the food.

    The camera is similar to the motion-sensing cameras used for home security. Again, the limitation of the bamboo feeder is the camera is fixed in one position, not adjustable. Also, the antenna is mounted inside the feeder, which decreases the wi-fi signal slightly. In use, this camera doesn’t have as much dynamic range as my old bird feeder’s camera. So the picture is very clear only under certain lighting conditions.

    The Birdfy app is easy to use. But initially, it limited some features because it didn’t recognize that I’m using a Birdfy camera. That problem seemed to improve after the camera captured several “moments”. Video is only limited to 20 seconds per moment. The AI correctly identified a Northern Cardinal visiting the feeder. Today, a raccoon came to eat from the feeder, and the AI misidentified him as a squirrel.

    The short video duration allows the small solar panel to keep the camera’s battery fully charged through the day. The solar panel has a mounting plate and a flexible arm to facilitate positioning. The mount for the feeder is hard to keep secure, since it just slides onto a hooked plate. Last night, that same raccoon knocked the feeder down by climbing on it. Interestingly, the video shows the raccoon was able to open and close the door of the camera housing, despite the door having a still latch.

    Overall, this is a nice product which reveals what animals secretly do around our house.

    This premium bird feeder is beautifully designed and comes with a high quality camera and app, allowing you to record, download, and share all of the videos of the different beautiful birds that visit your feeder. The feeder itself has an attractive, bamboo wood design that looks great. I can be mounted on a pole, wall, or tree. It also comes with a solar panel that keeps the camera charged. This is a great feature, as you never have to remove the camera from the housing to recharge the battery. The app also works great, and I was able to set up an account and pair it with the camera in just a few minutes (tip: if your camera doesn't pair with the app right away using the QR code, place your phone or tablet on a flat, brightly lit surface). The app is easy to use and has great functionality, alerting you when birds visit your feeder and allowing you to watch as well as download the videos. You can also view a live stream of your bird feeder camera at any time. The AI bird identification is another very cool feature, identifying the birds in your videos, so you can learn about all of the different types of birds that you see. You can tell that a lot of time went into the design of this product, and the final result was a truly impressive bird feeder and camera system. Overall, we're very pleased with this bird feeder and we would highly recommend it!
