About this item

Our climate future is not yet written. What if we act as if we love the future?

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do while facing an existential crisis is imagine life on the other side. This provocative and joyous book maps an inspiring landscape of possible climate futures.

Through clear-eyed essays and vibrant conversations, infused with data and poetry, Ayana Elizabeth Johnson guides us through solutions and possibilities at the nexus of science, policy, culture, and justice. Visionary farmers and financiers, architects and advocates, help us conjure a flourishing future, one worth the effort it will take—from every one of us, with whatever we have to offer—to create.

If you haven’t yet been able to picture a transformed and replenished world—or to see yourself, your loved ones, and your community in it—this book is for you. If you haven’t yet found your role in shaping this new world or you’re not sure how we can actually get there, this book is for you.

With grace, humor, and humanity, Johnson invites listeners to ask and answer this ultimate question together: What if we get it right?

5.0 out of 5 stars This book can make you fall in love with the future.

My sweetheart recommended this book to me during our second date and gave me a copy to read. By the time I finished reading the prelude and the introduction I had fallen in love. With the book. And with the person who shared it with me; and with the possibilities it shows are achievable if we get it right.

It’s rare to find such a wonderful mix of practicality, imagination, wonky insight, inquisitiveness, wit, joy and keen style in one book. Reading it was deeply enjoyable. It left me convinced that the future could be an incredible place to live, and it gave me a sense of the lengthy to-do list that humanity (you & me & everyone) needs to work through if we’re going to ward off apocalypse and build the world we want.

There’s even a playlist to rock out to while we work!

If you read ANYTHING in 2024 and 2025, read this. You will learn so much, and you will come away with ideas as to what individuals, communities, and governments can do to work on climate change, to make our future better. It's also a well-written book: using a variety of genres (interviews, narratives, etc.), it introduces you to climate change facts, groups and individuals who are working on ways to live better AND diminish climate change. Do read this and give it as a gift. Create your own neighborhood book club and share.

Ever watch someone do something so skilled, so right, that you're attracted? This book has that shine. Coming at climate crises from all sides of human endeavor, and led by the talented, passionate, and knowledgeable Ayana Elizabeth Johnson to keep it relevant, implementors from dozens of successful efforts explain the easy parts, the key parts, one nerdiest part, and the takeaways of the climate solutions they are implementing.

A smart, positive book that doesn't sugarcoat the truth, but doesn't descend into doomerism. Instead it lays out how much better things will be once we transition to a post-fossil fuel world, and explains how all of us can help get there.

An incredible collection of interview and perspectives with leading voices on climate change, social change, and hope. Read this, and then pass it on. I love the provocative title and it always gets me thinking, "and what if we DO get it right?" Which makes me think of Marge Piercy's utopian vision in "Woman on the Edge of Time"...and there she is on page 420 of this new tome.

Flipping thru the book when I first got it my eyes landed on a sentence towards the end ...

"so, go where there is need and where your heart can find a home"

As someone in transition, trying to find my place, how I can best use my skills, I sooooooo appreciate this one sentence and as I continue to read I find inspiration in the poetry, hope, and joy that Dr Ayana Elizabeth Johnson conveys throughout her book. Strongly recommend to my fellow scientists looking to apply their skills in new ways
