About this item

Cade

I always thought of Silas Rush as my biggest rival on the track and a stuck-up loner off of it. He and his fancy pro career left our crappy hometown in the dust before high school even finished, and then I didn't think of him much at all.

I was too busy trying to keep my little sisters from turning into addicts like our mom, and myself from turning into a rage-junkie like our dad. All while keeping food on the table.

Now he's back, reminding me of all the things I don't have, just like he always did.

Except now we're both adults. And when I… y'know… talk to the guy for once, it looks like my teenage self might have been too distracted to see all the things that Silas didn't have as well.

After catching him at his lowest possible moment, my heart goes out to the guy I used to hate. All my anger turns to guilt, and instead of a rival, I somehow end up with a socially awkward new best friend who's just as screwed up as I am.

Which I can handle. I can admit when I'm wrong. As long as things between us don't get any more complicated or confusing, I can handle it.

Silas

I have a very camera-ready smile. Dad always told me if I wanted to make my pro motocross career stick, I needed to get over all the awkwardness and anxiety that ruined high school for me and learn to act like a real boy for the public.

Never mind that I didn't want to be a pro rider, smile for the camera, or live life with Dad on the road and never know what it's like to have a real friend or—gasp—relationship. Years and years of motocross training, publicity training, and all-the-rest-of-it training, I still don't have a life, and one stupid mistake has left my precious career in the toilet.

The last person I expect to pull me out of this hole is Cade Waters. I'm pretty sure everyone hated me in high school, but Cade was front and center. Which sucked, because, with everyone else, he was sunshine personified. I was always the only person who sparked that anger in him, and I never even knew how I did it.

So, when Cade not only swoops in to help me in my darkest moment but decides to abandon our childhood rivalry and adopt me as his newest bestie/pity project, I'm not sure how to take it.

What I do know is that after a lifetime of having nothing I really wanted, all it takes is one glimpse of Cade's life to get me hooked. He's a mess, sure, just like I am. But all that sunshine… I want to grab onto it with both hands and never let go. No matter how confusing that feeling may be.

Stupid Dirty is a high-heat, high-angst M/M romance about dirt bikes, childhood trauma, and figuring out how to love someone the best way you can. For mature listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpectedly great book

This book was excellent. So well crafted. The main characters were beautifully broken. Loved how good of a man Cade is despite he rough circumstances. He loves his family and works hard. Silas is so misunderstood and lonely. Loved reading how their friendship evolved into romance and how they took care of each other without hesitation. I was also glad the author took care to write about the mental health issues responsibly. I was sad the book came to an end and hope the other books in the series update us on Cade and Silas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such an emotional read!

This book took me a LONG time to finish, but I wholeheartedly believe it was my mood, not the book. I truly enjoyed it, I just was having a HARD time trying to read and stay focused!

We meet Silas and Cade, two poor guys, just trying to make ends meet and take care of their own. Silas has a long history of abuse and manipulation behind him from/by his dad, and that in itself was heart wrenching to read! Cade has been playing the adult in his household for years—he has an awful dad, who is only in the picture when he needs money, and his mom is managing her childhood trauma in all the wrong ways, leaving him and his sisters to fend for themselves. The stories behind these two boys are a major part of the story—it’s a major part of who they are, and what they’re trying to overcome!

This is a dual bi-awakening, and these two navigating their feelings for one another was messy, intense, and just really fun to read! They are opposites to their core, but I absolutely loved how Cade worked HARD to get Silas out of his shell, and get him to be more present in the world around him. ALSO, the way in which he FOUGHT FOR SILAS!!! Cade is an enigma; he’s goofy and rarely serious, but when it comes down to it he cares deeply and fights hard for those he loves. There’s just something so damn hot about a guy begging their man to seek out help for their mental health issues!!

Don’t sleep on this book—it took me a while to read, but I think that was a me thing! I’ve been in a funk but I was bound and determined to finish it and see the end of these guys’ story. I did feel like the ending was very rushed—I would have loved to see more detail to the resolution of Cade’s family and what happened, as well as to see Silas actually sit through therapy sessions! Again, that’s probably a me thing! This was definitely a good read, and I recommend to those looking for a friends to lovers book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally caught me off guard of how amazing this would be

I didn’t go into this book with like a great idea of how FANTASTIC it would be but it’s been a pleasant surprise. Easily in my top 3 of MM romance novels. The reason this book is so great is because of a few key elements that blend together. Mainly the author is really quite amazing at depicting the blossoming friendship, tension, and romantic feelings between the two MCs in a way that does not feel rushed or simply based on sexual attraction. The two MCs have equally despondent childhoods and trauma and the author does an amazing job at expressing the trauma and emotions each of them feel while also tying that into their struggles with the each other through the book. This book has single handedly had the best imagery and descriptions of what it feels like to truly battle with your mental health so much so that it was almost a little triggering but in a good way. And the bond that Silas and Cade have is beautiful. I loved it. Not rushed, not solely focused on the sexual aspects of their relationship, and totally and completely RAW. 10 out of 10

4.0 out of 5 stars very good

This book surprised me. It is very well written, no plot holes, no bad editing and the characters seem very real. There’s a lot going on in Cade and Silas’s lives, but it’s handled deftly, dealing with a ton of emotional trauma while still remaining a light hearted good read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hard Earned HFN

I didn’t know what to expect with this book as this is Russell’s debut novel. The MCs were interesting and from the beginning had an intriguing way of how they were drawn to one another and sorting out their growing feelings.

I really enjoyed the two MCs and found myself more and more intrigued by their backstories and how their past traumas made them who they were on page. Cade, despite everything in his life was so happy and carefree whenever it was possible. And Silas had so many demons but came alive when he was with Cade. It was really fun to read about them discovering their feelings for one another and how they both felt so deeply for one another but struggled to put it into words.

There were definitely some frustrating moments of them having horrible communication and it was a bit annoying to read about them constantly thinking one thing and acting like another.

I wish I knew going into this book that it would be a HFN with a future book continuing their story. I was getting really annoyed to be at 95% and still be unsure where the story was going. The story was fun and sometimes tough to read but in the end Cade and Silas got me hooked enough that I definitely will return for the finish of their story and the next couple in this series!
