1.0 out of 5 stars It was great until it stopped working

    8/30/2014 update

Have used this product for over a year now on the same computer and never had a problem. I try to buy all Magix software for picture editing and music as well so that they will be compatible. Made a video of pictures about 3-4 months ago and worked just fine. Now I'm getting all kinds of error messages that freezes up my project and have rendered the product useless. I've tried it on a couple of different computers with different operating system and each time get the same message which leads me to believe that when the software contacts home to operate something has been changed. I have been a supporter of this product and the company for awhile now, but this leaves a very sour taste, and just a few days ago these guys sent me an email to buy more of their stuff. BEWARE!!! Buying from them you would have to be crazy. I didn't expect it to be perfect but I also did not expect to be pushed into buying their latest movie editing 2014 edition which has gotten TERRIBLE reviews.

    Previous review

I already had Movie Edit Pro 17 plus so the learning curve was definitely shortened by upgrading to this version. I am more than pleased and despite being in the middle of a short film project switched to this version as it added an even more polished look to my video. I have talked to others using different products and really count myself lucky that I did a little research in the beginning and found these guys. Doing videos all the time now with very little effort. I've used photos that I was able to animate as well as working exclusively with video and never had a problem (but I have also learned to back-up my projects as I go along. No need to ask for problems). Yes, it still takes a little while to mix down but that seems to have speeded up from the older version.

If you are thinking of doing video, yes there is a learning curve; but after talking with others it is shorter than a lot of software out there and not nearly as expensive. This version is loaded with features that will make you look like a major film maker when you decide to display your work. A very happy camper!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not As Wonderful As Some Reviews

I allowed myself to become convinced by some of the glowing reviews of this software; that was a mistake. There are multiple issues with this this product which I will list here:
    1) It is very prone to glitches. More than half the time I have to abandon "the project" because it just locks up and "is not responding".
    2) The owner's manual and online help are very poorly written. The authors seem to be under the impression the consumer is already well versed with Movie Edit Pro. Their answers are like that of politicians; it sounds like they're saying something but not really.
    3) The outlay is not user friendly. While working with the manual and the online help you are left wondering what an ill named function really is. Once you've decided to let curiosity dictate suddenly it's glitched and you have to close everything down.

If you can avoid this program from freezing up it does offer a range of editing which is convenient. The problem is that the only way to truly learn it is by randomly clicking and seeing what functions will get what you want.

At it's core Movie Edit Pro is a good idea but the designers need to go back to the drawing board. Once it's improved it may be worth it but as it stands right now all you're buying is a headache.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent video editing software

I bought this software as a first time video editor, so I can't compare this product to other. In general the software does the job. It allows one to edit video, add and edit music, and export the final product. However, the software is not very user friendly and the available manual didn't help much. I spent a lot of time on user feedback sites in order to understand how to add / utilize several features. Also, the sound edit feature is limited (example, when trying to clean up background noise). From other user feedback, it appears that it's much better to edit the video's sound with another software.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stable video editor with some good features...

I purchased this program to create fairly simple slide shows from photos and small video clips. I can't comment on how well it handles large video files but for photos and short video clips it works very well. So far I've spent nearly 80 hours with this program and have yet to experience a freeze or crash... even on my laptop which meets only the minimum system requirements.

The user interface works best with larger monitors, I struggled to make it fit properly on my 15" laptop. It does allow you to configure the various windows for your needs.

It handles photos and videos well and has some nice tools to allow you to get the look you want. I haven't used any of the presets as most are quite cheesy but creating your own is simple and intuitive if you have any experience with video editing.

Rendering is really quite fast compared to other programs I've used. My only gripe is that there seems to be no progress bar to show how the rendering is going. It is pretty unnerving to sit and wait, hoping that it is working. So far I haven't had any problems rendering and the finished videos have been great... high quality video and audio sync'd perfectly.

Overall its been a great product for my needs and the stability of the program has been outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best for the money

Like any decent movie editor it features a timeline function and multiple effects. The learning curve is steep, but as the number one software in Europe there is a large community which is very helpful and most of their videos on YouTube and elsewhere are in English(if accented). After an hour online, I was able to begin to cobble out usable movies from my footage. At $16 you cannot beat the value for money when compared to the costs of Premiere, Vegas, or others.
