Perfect for beginners. Great UI. It's been years since I used this, but I remember it being very cool. Now I use Cubase and Fruity Loops.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Make What You Like--If It Runs

I love this software! Wouldn't believe me if I told you that I saw this in a store for 10 bucks over two years ago! Heck, it's probably even less than that now.

I've always wanted to make my own music, but making your own tracks are extremely easy with this software! If you get a hookup into the Internet, you can compete with other "musicians" and have a Music Jam! I know I sound like a nerd here, but I love the fact that you can be extremely creative with the pre-made beats and make something that is completely of your own doing. I haven't made my own riffs yet, I haven't had the time.

Some drawbacks: It doesn't play all the time. The sound goes out when you start playing (and for some older computers, this was the case with the DirectX setup; it's not compatible with them). At other times, when I did get to play it, the sound got distorted, and at other times it would cut off in the middle of a sound track (the program itself would shut down), and I had to start over again. Not good when you're getting to hear your track or adding another instrument! Don't forget to save when you can! And the vocals? Yuck! I just stick to the instrumentals.

Otherwise, if it runs well, anyone can enjoy it. You can easily mix genres of music and make them sound good, even danceable. If you get a hold of this cheap (but valuable) CD, you'll be possibly be making tracks better than the pros!

It's not as easy to use as I remember. For one, I can't load it onto my computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grest! Even for music-maker newbies.

MTV Music Maker is fantastic! it is the best music software program on the market (even better than acid and a lot of other expensive programs). With it you can use a large collection of fantastic previous made loops, or--once your more advanced--you can make loops of your own! you can add tons of funky effects and make an endless about of groovy tunes. . .
The only problem is the poor quality in the sounds, keep in mind the sound quality is still good, but just as long as you keep your song to a minimum on the number of sounds at one time, for example: Bass and Synth and some Percussion will go great, but all that plus vocals, extra synth and more advanced musical combinations will turn up a little distorted. But the sound quality is still good enough to impress your friends, or maybe to add to a video cd of your own. But, as long as you don't care about having super professional sounding music you'll love this program!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun & Easy!

I was looking for an easy way to mix music for fun, and when I found the MTV Music Generator at such a low price I decided to try it out. I don't regret it at all. Using the Music Generator is so much fun-- mostly because it's so intuitive and hassle-free. You can make Rock, Techno, House, Beat or Bass & Drums tracks, choosing & editing hundreds of bass lines, drum loops, melodies, vocals, percussion and sound effects (like scratching). I was just a little dissappointed that you can't make hip-hop tracks, but considering the price, I can't complain. Besides making your own songs you can also join a group online in "Music Jam" and mix interactively with people from all over the world, or create a 3D video to accompany your song. You can also convert your songs to MP3 or WAV format if you want to burn them onto a CD. Overall, the MTV Music Generator is a great buy, I'd recommend it to anyone.
