My main goal in using Nero was to convert old VHS tapes onto Blu-rays. I was able to successfully do this using Nero 11 Platinum, Diamond One-Touch Capture, and Memorex Blu-ray discs.
At first I was skeptical about purchasing Nero 11 Platinum because of several poor reviews, but since I've worked with Nero 7 and had no significant problems with it, I decided to give the trial a shot. Unfortunately, the trial doesn't allow you to burn Blu-rays or even work on a Blu-ray project. I still played around with making DVDs on the trial and I must say that the user interface has definitely improved since Nero 7.
Here are features that I found helpful but not listed anywhere (from what I could find):
1. While working on the Blu-ray you can easily access how mush space your video files are taking up on the Blu-ray
2. You can choose whether you want to burn to Single Layer or Dual Layer (Be sure to use ImgBurn to see which one your drive supports and buy the corresponding Blu-ray discs)
3. You can add main videos (in my case, separate VHS tapes) that can be selected from the main menu. Once selected, you reach the chapter menu, for that main video, to choose the portions of that video you want to watch. Also, within each main video you can add other videos that you don't want selected from the main menu by drag-and-drop.
4. There is an option to block sounds in the video (for example, when someone swears). It is a little tricky to get the hang of though (You just go under Advanced Editing, select the bottom left button that says "Switch To Extended Timeline View", select Use keyframes next to Audio Level under the Properties tab after the video is selected, and then simply click and drag several places on the white line under "Audio 1" to cancel out portions of the audio)
5. Specifying chapters is intuitive (click the magnifying glass on the right)
6. You can shift the audio portion of the video if the audio is behind or ahead (just lock "Video 1" and slide the audio, under "Audio 1", accordingly.
7. You can span your access to audio and video content anywhere from seeing the whole video down to frame by frame.
8. You can apply effects to improve dark videos (using Auto Exposure, Brightness, and Contrast adjustments) as well as many other features like Blur, Color Balance, and Flipping the Video Horizontally or Vertically to name a few.
Nero 11 was tested on Windows Vista and Windows 7. If you use the trial and end up buying Nero 11 Platinum, you may want to uninstall the trial before installing Nero 11 Platinum because the disc comes with several Main and Chapter Menus Templates that the trial does not. You can also download some of the templates from Nero's website, but I don't think you'll get all that are on the disc.
On a final note, the only thing that annoyed me so far was that the "Movie Star" template works when creating a DVD but not a Blu-ray. The other templates that I have tried so far have not given me this problem. Just thought I'd save you from using that template particularly.
