This was easy to use and set up and we were able to see the mold growing in the petri dish! We even paid for the swab analysis which came back pretty quickly with what type of mold we had in our apartment.

If you're concerned about mold, this is a great, affordable, and easy product to use. I didn't have any issues setting it up, and the optional mail-in analysis was a great option to figure out what exactly your seeing in the petri dish.

4.0 out of 5 stars Accuracy is impossible to know

Only one kit is in a pack and the directions clearly state that to understand whether or not you have higher than normal levels of mold you need to get an indoor and outdoor reading. In fact, when you dig into mold remediation companies and mold in general you'll find that you need to basically test every area of your home at least twice and compare it to one or more outdoor samples to get a read on whether there's excess mold in your home and if it's different than what's outside. Even then, you don't know if the mold you found is benign or harmful unless you pay for a $40 test. That's fine, if you suspect an issue it's fair to have it sent to a lab for testing. The problem is that most people don't know that every home has mold in it. Some of that mold can even be the harmful kind. The trick to it all is that even with harmful mold it really won't affect you unless it is growing out of control at levels above what are considered safe, even for the harmful variety.

So as a test this works fine. I found mold growing in my daughters room and it was concerning. I removed the mold with a bleach solution and then ran this test a few days later to see whether or not there was the same kind of mold and an abundance of it. I left the Petri dish out for 3 hours instead of the recommended 1 hour and after 48 hours there were 2 of the tiniest mold spots growing in it. After 96 hours there were 3 of them, I could tell they were the same type I had cleaned off the wall and none were more than the size of a quarter. This tells me that there isn't a substantial mold issue in the room and that I need to continue to monitor the area where I first found it. Again, we're back to not knowing what the baseline for the home is because you have to buy multiple kits and test outdoors to get that baseline. So I base this off of the results of others in similar rooms that I've found online.

There is a 99% chance you will find mold with this test. That isn't necessarily bad. All homes have mold. You need to have a way of knowing whether there is some area that is consistently allowing mold growth, if the levels of mold growth are too high to be safe, and if the type of mold is dangerous to breathe (not all are). So be careful reading these results. The presence of mold doesn't mean you have an infestation and need remediation. All homes have mold. Best thing I could say is pay the $40 fee to get it tested to see if it's dangerous mold and even then you'll need to know whether it's consistently getting in your house and if the level of mold in the air is at a point where it's harmful to health which just can't be done without an expert coming out to test.

This product is really best to give one piece of mind after they've cleaned some mold. For me it let me know that yeah, there's still mold in the air but it isn't growing on the wall where I found it anymore and after taking a sample 3 times longer than the directions asked for I still only got minor growth after waiting 4 entire days.

The product is easy to use. It's like any other such kit on the market: pour the fluid in the dish, let it gel, then just leave it out uncovered for a bit, then cover it up and wait to see what grows (something will almost always grow).

The resulting growth has little value without getting an analysis, which is offered at an additional charge. That lab analysis is a selling point of this product.

Here's the problem: as of writing this there is no way to submit it. You are supposed to register your kit online in order to mail it in to the lab, but there is a message saying they are running behind by several days. However, despite that message merely stating that they are delayed, in reality there is no way to register AT ALL right now. Yesterday their website threw an error when you went to the registration page. Now it just redirects to a page that has no registration form. So you cannot submit your test for analysis, thereby making these kits little more than a home science project.

These should be taken off the market until Mold Armor is able to accept them for analysis again. Buy a different brand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Haven't used my mostly useless kit yet

After purchasing this I realized the methological flaws of the test kit. Mold grows everywhere, even in the wind, so a test that shows mold tells you very little. You've got to mail the kit to a lab for a professional analysis, and this introduces a number of possible error points, plus the lab fee seems a little high. How hot was the mail truck on its way there? Who knows?
This kit would possibly be useful for someone who conducts a few hundred tests annually, who can identify mold species on their own, and who could properly correlate temperature- and moisture- controlled mold growth rates with the presence of mold. A tall order. Even so, they would have to have a solid methodology for sample collection, and even then I can imagine scenarios where their assessment of the situation was wrong. Plus if they were doing that many tests they ought to buy their own potato starch.
Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works!

Went on a vacation for a week and had no allergy symptoms at all. Didn't sneeze once. Wasn't home for an hour and started having bad symptoms. Bad enough that I went to see a doctor. These kits told me more than my doctor did. I was able to see the mold growing in the petri dish and it led me to the source of the mold. I'm in the process of eliminating it. This mold was identified and found after performing the "Air Quality" test.

I also performed the "HVAC" test by placing the petri dish on a vent as directed. After 96 hours there is still no mold growing from this test.

By viewing different pictures of mold, I was able to identify mine as "Aspergillus".

This product worked well for me.

Loved this product. Does work great. I didnt realize that you are supposed to mail it in within 2 days of testing (my mess up for not reading everything) but outside of this, i will probably be purchasing more for other rooms in the house.
