This was a most surprising Amazon Prime pick. These past few years the picks have been disappointing, but lately are closer to my interest. I always wait about a week after Amazon first reads come out to and then read the most critical reviews before determining if a book will fit me. This book had no 1 or 2 ratings. What a rarity!
Written with clean humor and containing no vulgur language (which for me never adds anything and always distracts my attention).
The spitfire word battles between a 78 yr old aunt and her 20 yr old great-neice are extremely entertaining. I was held captive until 2am as chapter after chapter unfolded.
The story is one of women trapped into roles by 1960 society rules of behavior and how those women who are "testy" enough will push the boundaries to live a satisfying and fullfilled life on their terms.
The expected outcomes are well written as are a couple of twists and surprises. I am eager to read other works by this author.
Edited to add there is now a 2 star review stating in the reviewer's option that the 20 yr old acts 15. Well I lived in that period and can tell you that's how single women living with parents at that time were treated and that's why the young adult women responded in what we may think of today is a 15 year old. Back then we were prisoners so to speak in our parents home. States did not acknowledge adult status until 21 or if married. That's all part of the late 60's revolution. The freedom to leave home before being married. While I would never dare speak to my parents or any adult as she did, I can picture those behaviors and words as something my sister would say and do.
Whether a fact or two was taken from 1958 or 1960 doesn't bother me. This was fiction and quite well researched according to her Epilogue including the interviews of people who actually lived there in 1960 and their memories of places and people.
As to the bad grammar, if it's there it's fairly innocuous. I struggle with poorly written books and this one was not a struggle to read.
