About this item

The year is 1841 and Grayson Sherbrooke, a popular author of gothic paranormal mysteries, lives on the coast of Northern England with his 4-year-old-son, Pip. He's asked by a neighboring little girl, P.C., to come to Wolffe Hall because something terrible is threatening her and her mother. She's come to Grayson because she's confused him with his fictional hero, Thomas Straithmore, who overcomes all obstacles and always triumphs over otherworldly evil. Thus, to her mind, Thomas is the only one to save them. She describes the house shaking with terrifying tremors and a huge black hole she calls the Abyss appearing in the entrance hall. She also knows the menace involves her great grandfather, known as The Great. He's obsessed with collecting and returning the famous Waterloo medals to the soldiers of the great battle of 1815, but he refuses to tell anyone why he's doing it. Grayson is soon embroiled in a mystery involving a wrongful death on the battlefield at Waterloo and a paranormal force that threatens the very lives of those living in Wolffe Hall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short Novella Start of the Series

i am so happy that the author is writing in the romance stories. I have all the earlier stories she wrote. I am not a thriller reader. The story is a short novella to start the series off.Grayson Sherbrooke or his alias Thomas Straithmore writes gothic paranormal books. He is sent for one night as Thomas to save the mistress she turns out to be eight. I thought the book had delightful characters his son Pip, PC the mistress, Barnaby the young boy and the barn cat. Thomas is a widow and seems like in other stories to come may be a romance between PC 'S mother Miranda . The strange happenings are solved with Thomas's help. I won't give away what caused them or why. I am looking forward for the next book..

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Read!

I can't help myself I love Catherine Coulter's historical's. I can remember reading her stories back to back. Now don't get me wrong, I also liked her contemporary romantic suspense, but her historical's will always be my favorite.

The Strange Visitation at Wolffe Hall has been sitting on my kindle for about a year and I had yet to read it. Odd for me I know but it's been so long since she put out a historical and I've been very busy reviewing that it slipped through the cracks. I was cleaning up my books and trying to figure out which series I was missing books in (I hate when that happens) and came across this one.

So since I needed something for our Clearing Off the Shelves post I figured why not.

I am, but not really surprised that there isn't really a romantic element in this story. By Grayson is a Sherbrooke so I really didn't care. I loved visiting with him and his son, pip. The story is a mix a mystery and paranormal.

It has everything you like about Coulter's writing. Great characters with a humorous wit! This is a very quick read. I didn't know when I started it that it was only about 90 pages. I wasn't paying attention.

Loved the Sherbrooke series. After reviewing my thoughts and remembered where Grayson fit in the family it helped to identify with the book. I am glad I read the book but It didn't hold my interest like most of Ms Coulters books usually do. I will follow the series though.

I really enjoy Catherine Coulter's books! I think I have read nearly all of them. This book goes back in time to the latter end of the 1800's and us an adventure of Grayson Sherbrooke. He is a writer of supernatural books. When a nearby family has a supernatural experience they ask Grayson to help. He does so. Read the book to learn more about what it is all about,.

Visitations by spirits and black funnel clouds, with an abyss opening in the floor is just the beginning of this other worldly tale. When a spirit from the past can't get its point across it becomes quite violent. Interesting tale if you are into paranormal tales.

As usual, Catherine Coulter shines in her historical romances. Her characters are engaging and humorous. The story is original. It is well written. I liked the touch of the supernatural that is a little more emphasized than in most of the other "Brides" novels, although that was not unexpected with Grayson as the hero. Although this novella can be read without having read any of the "Brides" series, I recommend that you read some of them as well.????

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of Catherine Coulter

I thought the subject matter, combined with the fact that it was written by Catherine Coulter, would guarantee a good read, however, I felt like this was thrown together very quickly. The dialog was somewhat ridiculous and the plot resolved much to quickly. From now on, I will be more careful to read reviews before buying another of Catherine Coulter's books. I cannot trust the quality control anymore. She should be more careful of what she puts out there.
