5.0 out of 5 stars Useable Web Creation

Web Plus x4 is a practical application it does a lot for what you pay, it is well supported, they do answer you and the on line and in package support is good. Yes is needs more work on it that is why it is called Plus x4, no doubt there will be Plus x5 and so on in the future, applications develop and this one will be no exception. Expect great things from these people, they are taking note of every comment here and elsewhere.

As a user of computer technology for many years now I have seen programs come and go, a few stay and many become standards in the industry for which they are designed. There is every chance that this product may be one that sticks around for the long term. It can do what it advertises and that is an achievement in a world laden with vapour ware and wiffle. The main packages in web site creation cost a fortune and the vendors do little to make them useable for those who need rapid web site or document production. The whole point of technology is leverage in getting things done or who needs it?

Yes there are features that are not supported, so tell them about it! No software firm is going to ignore you, over time much of what you wish will appear, perhaps not all, but most is good enough. There is need for software to be able to partner with other component providers and suppliers; web site creation is perhaps an area where this is vital more than most. I have used a database software system Alpha Five for years it is now web aware and SQL savvy, so goes development of a once PC based system to a more generalized WWW generation, Web Plus is no exception, more and more firms are becoming de facto partners in permitting functionality to operate within each other's platforms. Not everything fits at first, reviews and comments send messages to those who create software to permit crossover and co operation in the way software works. I intend, in time, to see if the two above systems can be made to work together, if not I will put up comments on their blogs to see if others have ideas and so on. Users have a responsibility to do what you can yourself then ask others and the providers for help. In my experience solutions evolve and we all move on to better functionality. Web Plus x4 is a typical product that does what it does efficiently; it will evolve to greater things.

So far I have found it easy to use but it isn't trivial in the way it works or what it offers. You do need to learn how to play it, there is much it can do already. So far I have yet to need things that it can't do, when that happens I will let them know.

If you need working web sites this software will do it, if you need high art and technology it will do much that is flashy but not all. For those who need the extras either wait for the next version or learn the top end software or pay up for the programmers. I have a budget and items two and three on that list are non starters for me. There is one trite point and it is this about web sites, so much time is wasted on technology when a well planned site on paper with the right menus and good writing with meaningful graphics wins every time. That old aphorism KISS keep it simple stupid works for me, I hate web sites that are a bane to navigate and are all but irrelevant and/or meaningless in content.
Web Plus x4 will guide you, as it has me, to create functional web sites.

It is early days for me but I expect success for this software for them and me. NO I don't work for them.

I have used Front Page and Expression to build a couple of websites. Neither of those are that user friendly, but I have a friend who has a website that needs e-commerce, which Expression does not have so I thought that WebPlus X4 sounded great and would be simple to use. How wrong I was. Nothing is simple about it. I first loaded it and found that the screen had so much clutter that I closed a bunch of the boxes around the design page, which somehow thinks that you can design a website by viewing 36% of the page. Of course you can blow it up to 100% but you don't see the entire page. The instruction book is good at referring to tabs that can help you, but the problem is you can't find the tabs on the program to help you. I finally uninstalled the program to reload it and some of those boxes I had closed the first time had some of the tabs, so now I have one third of the screen on the left filled with tabs, the right third filled with other tabs, the bottom of the screen has smaller tabs, so your left with a postage stamp of a design window.

Some of the design is easy, drop and drag. If you want to insert a lot of pictures you have to manually downsize them each time, and if your website is extensive in pictures this will become very old fast. It would be nice if the program had the "thumbnail" option that Expression/Front Page has.

The master page function works slightly better than Expressions, but it is still very difficult to use. The file structure of WebPlus x4 is very much different than what you would normally find in Expression, and different that even what most computers use.

I have worked with WebPlus x4 for about 4 days now, and have not got much accomplished. It is an extremely frustrating program. I spent a day trying to figure out the e-commerce function, and how to put about 70 items where they could be bought without having to do each one separate. They have a built in data base that smells like a rose, you think it will work like a rose but instead your knee deep in fertilizer when you try to apply it to your page. So I thought I would start out the route of doing each item separate, but the block of each item comes out with a different layout than the first one, even if you enter the same information. So much for a page looking uniform.

I will update this review as time goes on, but bottom line today, if you want a program that has a lot of pretty icons, button and boxes that do nothing than clutter up your screen, a help section that is good about talking about "tabs" that you can't find, a program that won't let you see HTML code and will drive you crazy with inconsistently then WebPlux x4 is for you.

UPDATE ON REVIEW: After a few more weeks of working, I was able to finally publish the website. As one other reviewer noted, Webplus has perfected on how to hide tools or screens that you really need to use in their menu system, and has even taken it one step farther by calling the tool or screen by one name in the help index or the manual, but naming it something else in the program. There are several features that are great, and I wish that Expressions would have, but overall I will stay with Expressions unless I have to build a website that needs ecommerce. There is one very redeeming feature, their online forum. I was having major problems trying to publish the website (one of the key settings was buried in two or three screens and was named something totally different than what the online help called it) and email Webplus and also put a post on the forum. Within 5 minutes I had several answers and they had the patience to walk me through the steps I needed (click on this tool, then on this sub menu, then on this tab, then look down and click in the middle of the page on this tab). It took the Company over a week to respond to my email.

One last thought, don't be worried if you get a book or not with the product. The book is basically the same as the help section of the program, and I found the book great for bathroom reading, no one stays in long to read it!
